Nearly 8 months and not yet sitting

My DD is about to turn 8 months and is still not sitting independently for more than about 5 seconds MAX at a time.
Is this strange and worrying behaviour?

Neither of my DD's sat independently until after they started to crawling at about 10 mths, i shouldnt worry, she will probably just do every thing at once, try not to worry, she is still very young.

No I don't think so..have you had your 8 month check yet?

BigBearistheBigBear · 21/08/2007 09:52

Not had an appointment for 8 month check yet. She can roll well, and is very mobile that way, so I sometimes wonder if she can't quite see the point in sitting. But her balance doesn't seem quite right.

you seem concerned, why don't you ask to organise the check now because you have some worries? Just to put your mind at rest...

carocaro · 21/08/2007 10:08

ds2 7 mnths and cat sit up, but can't roll at all, there seems to be a mix of both in my ante natal group, so I would say it is normal, but pop along to baby clinic if your 8 month check is too far away and you are worried

Ok, will try and see HV. Thanks. I've been watching her this morning, and when she falls to one side she doesn't steady herself with her arms, she just clonks on the floor. (I mean she would do ... obviously I grab her!)

Keep an eye. My DD was hypotonic and didn't sit until 9 months.

CarGirl · 22/08/2007 11:19

dd3 was nearly 11 months, although I think it's because she didn't get uch practise as she spent the 1st 6 months attached to my hip screaming so no opportunity to strengthn muscles etc.

Just give her lots of tummy/rolling time, she probably isnt that interested as she's mobile.

BigBearistheBigBear · 23/08/2007 08:36

Can I ask, what is hypotonic? What does that mean long term? How is your DD now NAB3?

DD is absolutely fine now, thank you. I love seeing her run around when the consultant said she wouldn't walk, or it would be very late. She walked at 13 months.
Hypotonic is when the child has low muscle tone. At the high end the child would have Spina Bifida but my DD was at the lower end. She had a couple of sessions of private physio and we were also having her seen at the BUPA hospital and GOSH. It was thought she had a problem with her feet but she didn't. she didn't but at all the unnecesary worry and x-rays.

DS2 has just had his 8 mth check only sat up for a second ( passed just!) my others sat up late, more interested in rolling about and colouring the carpet in with sick!!..don't worry..

americantrish · 23/08/2007 17:36

my ds didnt sit up unassisted until he was half away between 8 and 9 months. i would try not to worry about it!
