Night time sleeping problem

My little girl is 3wks old and an absolute joy that is until night time. During the day she will sleep anywhere, her moses basket, car seat or in my arms but at night when I come to put her down in her moses basket she just won't settle. The longer I leave her the more she cries and as a 1st time mum I find it difficult to leave her crying. The end result is she sleeps next to me in our bed, she settles straight away and it allows me and my husband to get some rest.
Can anyone help me get her to sleep in her moses basket at night?

Look forward to your replies

Hi Gmem
Congratulations on the birth of your daughter!

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems getting her to sleep at night, but at only 3 weeks old, it's not an unusual problem.
When you put her down in her moses basket, is she already asleep after feeding or is she still awake?
Different babies react differently to both situations, so maybe you could try the other.

Are you really desperate for her to sleep in her moses basket now? If all three of you are able to sleep when in the same bed, maybe you can continue like that for a week or two and then try her in her moses basket again. New borns change a lot in a week and you may find that she'll sleep quite happily then.

When babies are first born they don't know the difference between day and night, but one of the main differences between the two is often the level of noise. Could it be that she can sleep peacefully during the day because there is plenty of noise and bustle going on so that she feels safe. Maybe the night is too quiet for her and she doesn't feel safe enough to sleep unless she is actually in the same bed as you. Have you tried a baby lullaby CD or some other background noise? Even leaving the door open so that she can hear the TV that you're watching in the evening or something may help.

It is so stressful, I completely understand. Both my daughters were like this at 3 weeks but are fine at settling now. They too ended up in my bed out of sheer desparation!
Do you put her to bed when you go to bed?
If so i would decide on a bedtime and start settling her then. Its easier to cope with a crying baby at 7pm rather that 11pm when you need some sleep. And if she cries for an hour then, at least you manage better at that time. It may take a few days to get her used to it but I've found this to be really succesful.
Also, I've never really had much success with moses baskets, even though both of my girls went into one. They both slept much better in a cot. Don't know why, but they did.

I have found swaddling works well - Babies still have the startle reflex at this age and flapping their arms about keeps them awake - my baby is just over 4 weeks old and wouldn't settle well in the evening / at night before the Health Visitor suggested swaddling. Brilliant!

Thanks for all the advice.
Last night seemed a lot better! I put her to sleep in her moses basket in our room during the day and she seemed to settle at night - hope this is the start of things to come. Will keep you posted
