High score ASQ SE questionnaire

Name changed for this.

Have the health visitor coming out soon for DD (2). Have filled in the Ages and Stages questionnaire and have checked the scoring online and she has scored very highly (the cutoff score is 57 and hers is above 100) which seems to mean that she will need a referral. We have already considered that she could have ASD and are going to discuss this.

Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and what this meant for their child. What will the health visitor do when she comes out since the score is higher? Does anyone have any advice on getting an ASD diagnosis at this age?

Just to clarify it's the Social Emotional questionnaire I'm referring to.

Hi, Didn't want to read and run, My LO at the ASQ SE at 18 months, the HV made us do it then asked us additional questions about general behaviour ect ect.
We got 'Well they're still very young' ect but if you have ASD concerns already then please don't feel powerless and please push for an ASD assessment referral. I've found that sometimes you do have to do a bit of work on getting a referral, however I think because your DD's score is so high they might look to refer you without any argument.
Sorry I can't be of more help x

Thanks for replying. Yeah I'm thinking that because her score is so high that they will refer her. Do you know who the referral usually goes to? I just feel clueless about the whole situation and am starting to worry now about what this all might mean.

I was in a similar situation with my DS a couple of years. The pathway can vary depending on your area. If you look online for your Council’s Local Offer this should give information on how referral’s work in your area.

Ask the HV to refer you for a hearing test as well. Any hearing issues should always be ruled out first. Other than the HV, other options to request referral for assessment would be your GP and in some areas SALT. Again have a look online some Council’s have drop-in SALT clinics, but unfortunately not all.

Also, just to say if you are concerned then don’t let HV take a wait and see approach (some can be reluctant to refer until a child is 3 years). Best to push for referral now as waiting lists for assessment can be long and if your DD needs support you will be able to get it in place sooner.

Thanks @magicroundabouts. I've tried looking for local information but haven't had any luck yet - will try and have another look today and see what I can see.

I think that's what's worrying me about the health visitor coming, in case she does just suggest waiting. I've had concerns for a while now and lately other family members have started to feel the same as me, so I definitely would like a referral sooner rather than later. Thanks for the advice about the hearing test too, I'll make sure to get that checked.
