DD has got hers next month and our hv is useless. At her 8month check which she had at 7.5months she didn't display her pincer grip mainly because she was crawling and crusing round the room and to excited by the great big bed with rail which she could walk along holding on with one hand to be bother with the tiny bit of paper the HV put on the floor. HV said ooo she a bit slow!!! didn;t seem to take into account the display of gross motor skills. So really want to aviod the hastle again of DD failing part of it!! so what should i hot house her in?

just to put you into the while picture this is the same HV who told me that my 6week old baby should be drinking between 6-8oz of expressed breast milk a feed, and which worried me when she bearly took 4oz. Then when i stopped expressing and solely breats fed ended up horribly engorge and in a lot of pain.

This is the checklist we were given for ds1:

Does your child:

Walk alone
Run
Go up/down stairs
Throw/kick a ball
Kneel/squat
climb

Can they:

Point to one or more bodyparts
say 20 single words
string 2-3 words together
Understand simple commands
show pretend play

hold a pencil and scribble
turn individual pages of a book
build a tower of 4-6 bricks
point to named objects in books
place piece in simple jigsaw inset board

drink from cup/bottle
feed himself with spoon
help with dressing/undressing

HTH

Wow. Over here the yearly check ups are purely physical. Height, weight, thorough check of all the body. No developmental stuff.

nutcracker · 23/09/2004 18:44

Just wanted to ask what would happen if they couldn't do all of those things.
Ds will be having his check soon too and he cannot help get himself dressed or undressed, put a piece in a simple jigsaw, point to named objects in a book, kick a ball or show pretend play.

katzguk, I know what you mean....I have actually ripped up dd's two year appointment and put it in the bin. Really sick of HVs here but that is another thread...

hercules · 23/09/2004 18:48

Dont take her. My hv refered dd to SALT at her 8 month check.

coppertop · 23/09/2004 18:49

Ds1 failed his 2yr check-up on things like language, pointing, pretend play, dressing/undressing. The HV focussed on what she saw as his major problem and referred him for speech therapy. The speech therapist was the one who referred us on to the Paed.

Sometimes they just say that they'll give the child a bit longer to catch up. We waited an extra month with ds1. Otherwise I think they may well refer you to the Paed, Nutty.

hello all my ds check they showed him a book and asked us to get him to name some objects all he did was point to one of about 25 objects and said wapple (apple)!!

they were concerned about his speach and said would review it in about 6 months but theres no shutting him up now right little chatterbox!

rolled a small piece of paper up and asked him to pick it up off the floor to see his thumb and forefinger pincer movemen.t

and rolled a ball accross the floor and asked him to run and get it

height weight etc also

nutcracker · 23/09/2004 18:56

Do they expect them to be able to say words properly ???

Ds can say a few things but most people wouldn't have a clue what he was saying.

The thing that worrys me a bit is that if they asked him to do something, say like what peachypie said pick a peice of paper up, or go and get the ball, he wouldn't be able to understand them that is for sure.

He has only just learnt to nod his head for yes, and for exampl today i said 'bannana harry' ?? and he just grinned at me, so i said 'do you want one (whilst holding the bannana up) and he still just grinned.

I have a hell of a job getting things across to him sometimes.
The other day i took his coat off and said put it on the pushchair and he did it. Since then if i ask him he just grins and walks off.

I find him quite confusing tbh

thanks for the additional reassurance. I don't think DD will fail she is generally above her peers in devlepment but after the 8 month check with the crazy HV who couldn't see passed the end of her nose, i just don't want the additional hastle.

plus i want her speach referring to a speach therapist she has a tongue tie and i want a professional (not incompetant HV) to tell me that its okay.
