This is my friend's baby. I have never heard of this before!

normal - every child develops at its own rate, the percentiles are based on averages at those ages, so it can swing in roundabouts for different children. nothing to worry about.

Yep, my dd1 did this, and is still, at 3 yeard old, between 91st and 98th centiles (was a very tiny 6lb odd when born).

Dd2, on the other hand, has done the exact opposite, and was born over the 50th centile for both and has slowly dropped and dropped until she is now, at 6 months between the 2nd and 9th.

Both are healthy and happy, just obviously total opposites!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 10/08/2007 20:37

yes - DS2 went from 25th to 91st by the time he was 4 weeks old.

DS3 went from 9th to 75th between 5 and 10 weeks

nickytwotimes · 10/08/2007 20:38

My ds - 30 ish at birth then around 90 since about 4 mths!

christywhisty · 10/08/2007 21:51

My DS did this, He was on the about 15th centile when he was born, by a year old he was 75th and not at nearly 12 he is about 90th for height.

DD 9 was exactly the same weight as DS when she was born but has hovered about the 50th centile from about 6 months

MuffinMclay · 10/08/2007 21:51

DS did exactly that, but is now back down to the 25th centile at 15 months (a combination of being on the move all day and erratic eating).

mumsville · 10/08/2007 21:53

Yep, mine was in the 2nd(so cute) percentile for wieght and 25 for height and then by 9 months was in 75 for both and has stayed like that.

MadLabOwner · 10/08/2007 21:57

My (excellent) HV said that birth weight and size is controlled by two factors - the baby's genetic makeup and the state of your placenta. If you are both huge people and have a small baby then it may be that your placenta wasn't up to the task, so the baby will grow to the size it is meant to be over time. Equally, if you are tiny and have an enormous baby, then it is likely that the baby may drop through the centiles over time as your placenta sort of overfed the baby in the womb. Anyone else heard this?

MadLabOwner · 10/08/2007 21:58

Not meaning to insult anyones' placentas here BTW.

mush4brains · 11/08/2007 09:03

Yes, think its called something like catch up & catch down??

NineUnlikelyTales · 11/08/2007 09:06

MadLabOwner that is one of the funniest statements I have ever read on here

My DS did catch-down and other babies I know did catch-up. It is pretty ludicrous to expect that babies will keep growing steadily at the same rate without any extra spurts or slower periods, IMO.

christywhisty · 11/08/2007 11:45

With DS I had pre eclampsia from 32 weeks and he was finally induced between 37/38 weeks. I am 5'2 and hubby is 6'2. So whatever happened in the womb may well have affected his growth, when he obviously inherited his dad's height and caught up within the first year.

DD was born at 37 weeks(of her own accord) but there was obviously no room left in the womb and needed to come out. She had positional talipes from being squashed. She has never been more than 50th centile for height or weight.
They were both 6lb 7oz born about the same gestation yet have grown very differently.

LIZS · 11/08/2007 12:13

I suspect our nephew has done simialr.

JazzyGsMummy · 11/08/2007 12:52

Don't worry, My dd was only 6lb 11oz, around 9th centile at birth (8 days overdue) by 6 weeks she was up to 50th, 10 weeks 91st and at 16 weeks she hit 98th and has stayed there ever since. similar thing happened with her height too.
