Potty training and constipation issues

My DS2 is 3.5 months and nursery is looming.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of potty training a child that has been constipated on and off more or less since he has been born. He needs prompting but is doing pretty well with wee's most days limited accidents. However, I just can't get him to poo in a potty, does in pants if I refuse the nappy pleas or saves it for the night. It exacerbates his constipation.

He has speech and communication issues (possibly ASD).

Nursery want him to wear pull ups but that kind of undoes my hard hard work. Not sure whether to leave it until later or .....???? anyone any ideas?

hi spacegirl,
My eldest had been constipated since day one as well, She was very good with wee's,but poos what very different. At the end I had to force her to sit on the potty and stay there until she had done it. I know that forcing is not advisable, but it worked for me. Together with forcing her, I bribed her, the first couple of times with chocolate. I know probably all the wrong advise, but for me it worked, and after a couple of times to force/bribe her, it was all over, and she used the potty everytime.

Cheers ta for ur suggestions. Glad it worked for you! It is reassuring to know that DS2 is the only one that has constantly been constipated. I have tried bribes but don't know if his SN means that he doesn't get the incentives offered but he just has meltdowns if forced.

Hi Spacegirl. I used to work at a playgroup for children with speech issues/asd etc and what we used to do if this was an issue is to put them in nappy to poo ... but sat on toilet/potty with it on, lots and lots of praise, rewards etc .... then cut a hole in nappy and make it a bit bigger everyday so eventually a poo will end up in toilet -this generally seemed to be key to SEE the poo in the toilet and make the connection - I think a lot fo time children are scared of it because its unknown IYSWIM Don't if this is intelligable or any help but just wanted to post!

Thanks Katylou, I might suggest that to his new nursery. Hopefully he will be caught before he takes himself off to a quiet place! Also it gives me the idea to try and make him sit on the potty when he has his nappy on and is pooing if I can catch him in the act. Then maybe we can progress to holes.

The plus side of being constipated is that it probably that poo will only coincide with nursery mornings now and again.
