Can anyone recommend some books on child development / parenting for a 5-year-old?

Well, I know that a lot of people on here rate "How to talk so that children will listen, and listen so that children will talk".

I've been recommended this one - have yet to get it, but lots of people have raved about it (and the how to talk etc etc one too)

I like the Christopher Green that ejt linked to - I never have, and still don't, read many childcare books but there are times when you need help, and Green's Toddler Taming makes you feel so much better whilst offering practical, sensible advice. "Beyond Toddlerdom" is very similar for older children. I think some childcare authors either haven't had children, or haven't spent much time with them, or have been lucky enought to have near perfect kids. Green gets it right IMHO. Best source of info remains MNet. Shame it wasn't around when mine were little!

I would definitely buy the Science of Parenting. It's the only book I've come across that's actually based on scientific studies rather than different 'experts'' very different theories! So I trust it. It deals with shyness + a lot of stuff on emotions (which it says you need to take seriously and not try to get children to snap out of it; basically help the child to understand why they're feeling like that and support them as they often feel overwhelmed. I may not be paraphrasing the book very well but i'm glad I've read it anyway!

I have LOVED Toddler Taming and found it very helpful. Beyond toddlerdom is definately worth a buy.

Anything form these people would be marvellous. I use their stuff when I work with families and also their course material for parenting courses.

The highly sensitive child is good too, dd2 was very shy, clingy and over emotional - still is but it helped me see it from her perspective. I also found the "how to talk so......" v good too.

Steve Biddulph is good. The Secret of Happy Children. I'm having problems with ds being shy and not saying hello, just grunting at people and he has some good suggestions.

I'm new to Mumsnet so reading messages with interest but the Highly Sensitve Child is a FAB book - really helping me understand my 3 year old daughter....
