Referred to speech and language

So my 2 and a half year son had his 2 year health visitor visit and she's referred him to speech and language. I am terrified, I don't know what to expect! I thought he was a really good talker as he spoke much quicker than my first but she said he's not connecting words and what he is saying aren't real words. I do admit I do worry about him because he seems to be so angry all the time and will have tandems for at lease half a hour and we can't comfort him. He does go to nursery 2 mornings a week so I though that would help but it's not helping for him.
Any idea for what I should expect or any advise would be so helpful :)

Have you had his hearing checked? We were referred to SALT at a similar age albeit for different reasons. It took a long time sitting on the waiting list but has worked wonders. My ds's problems were producing certain speech sounds but he was also very slow to speak and used nonsense words.

It took our initial speech and language assessment for anyone to suggest a hearing test. Even after that it took lots of pushing (and rolling eyes from) the gp to get referred to ENT and for a hearing test. He was diagnosed with glue ear which has explained all sorts of other things too. We never had major behaviour issues or tantrums but many children who suffer with glue ear do as it is so much harder work to hear for them.

Of course, it might not be but may be worth checking.

He's got a hearing test in a 2 weeks. My little girl had a hearing test but nothing came of it, everything was fine. I'm just more worried now about his behaviour since seeing the health visitor. I've notice more negative behaviour that he's doing, like hitting us and his sister and he's gets so angry at very small things and I've noticed he's speech isn't as good as I thought since seeing the health visitor.

Bless you, sounds tough. Glad you've got a hearing test booked. It will be good to rule it out if nothing else.

In terms of speech and language, they started off with an initial assessment and from then they decided which route was most appropriate. It took a while on the waiting list but they booked us onto a parent workshop that gave us a few tips to help us until we were seen.

Good luck with it. X

Both of mine have had SLT and it was a positive experience with both DC. Lots of play based activities which he should enjoy.

This Progress Checker from Talking Point should give you a better idea of where he is compared to other 2.5 year olds.

If he's very angry, The Explosive Child might help you both Thanks
