Obsessed with toilets

My ds has been dry during the day for about 3 weeks. Since then, every time he spots a toilet when out, he insists that he needs to go to the loo. He seems to think that it is fun to use public loos. They have even commented on it at playgroup. He doesn't do this at home, although he always wants to flush the loo (ooh, the excitement ), and he manages to hold a full bladder well usually.

I am getting a little worried about his obsessive behaviour, but a friend today said that it sounded fairly normal to her. (She has a ds 11 months older than mine).

What does everyone else think? When I say obsessive, I really mean it...I think I saw every public loo in Cornwall last week!

I don't have a ny children yet but to me it just sounds like he's excited and proud that he can do something new and grown up. I wouldn;t worry too much

God, totally normal. It will wear off after eighteen years... I mean, about 3 weeks!

stupidgirl · 20/09/2004 21:56

My dd is 3.7, she has been dry for about a year and she still does this! She still loves visiting different loos and even if she has been 5 minutes before, if she sees a public loo she wants to go. No advice really, but it's not unusual.

MeanBean...Nooooooo! Bless him, I keep muttering to him 'Going to the loo is not meant to be FUN!'

You could be writing about my ds1! Everytime he goes to a new place he has to find out where the toilets are (understandable I suppose) and then he goes again and again and again.... He likes the whole routine of flushing the toilet, washing his hands and then drying his hands if there are paper towels.

The good news is that it really does get better. Ds1 is probably a contender for Junior Obsessive of the Year but even his phase only lasted a couple of weeks. The novelty does eventually wear off.

Thank you all. I am heaving huge sighs of relief here. 'Heave'...'relief'

dd4 does this too. Cant stop at a supermarket/petrol station/mcdonalds without her wanting to go to the loo. She's 3.6.

Very normal behaviour. I got obsessed about loos when we lived in Indonesia. Most loos there are really skanky so when I saw a reasonable one I made everyone use it, on the premise that we mightn't see another decent one for the rest of the day!!

Dh thought that I mught have been a victim of my own success in relation to the sticker chart! When we got back from Cornwall, I told him that there were no more stickers, and let him choose a DVD as a 'well done' for being dry at night too.
