Terrified my DD has hip dysplasia

So I've literally just noticed my 4 month old DD has a different roll of fat at the top of one leg, after some googling I've discovered this is a sign something is wrong with her hips and especially as it is right at the top and her bum creases are uneven. Trust it to be the weekend so I won't be able to make an appointment until Monday, but now I've terrified myself looking at the casts they have to wear if that's what it is etc. I know it's not the end of the world but the fact I've not seen it before makes me wonder if it's something I've missed and she should have been seen sooner, she had all the normal hip checks and nothing was picked up then. I don't even know what my question is but does anybody have any advice/reassurance?

I really would try to step away from google and do something else. Make a plan to speak to your GP or JV next week and until then, try to relax.

Even if she does have it, you've spotted it now. I know one kid where it wasn't picked up until 20 months when the FP finally went to the GP.

I don't know where exactly the fat creases are, but my boy had uneven fat creases at the top of his legs and is walking fine. I think you could be over thinking.

This tends to run in families, any history you know of? Also, the clicky hip test is usually done before you leave hospital, presumably that was OK? We have a history of hip dysplasia, so both my dc had an ultrasound around 8 weeks old to double check, which was quick and easy and excluded it straight away so if you are referred for a test you will have an answer very soon. My sil had the casts, it was a long time ago now, 70s, and treatment has probably changed but it fixed her within a few months as a baby and she has had no long term problems

Thank you all for replying. Made an appointment at the doctors although not till next week, and been to see the health visitor as its easy to just pop in and they've said to go to the docs.
I know googling things isn't the right thing to do but I can't help noticing the examples on Google are exactly the way hers looks. I think I'm more worried of the fact she'll be nearing 5 months by the time we get seen and treatment is more invasive/longer if its left too long, if it is what she has got I'm so gutted it wasn't picked up earlier.
She was checked at birth and 6 weeks and was all fine then, I don't notice any clicking when changing her and both legs appear to be the same length and same range on movement etc. So that goes in my favour.
Going to try not to stress about it and will update when I know anything more 🙂

Hi, not sure if you have now had this confirmed or that all is ok. Both my daughters had hip issues.
My first daughter was diagnosed at birth and wore a harness for 6 weeks my youngest daughter wasn't diagnosed until 4 months and had traction, casts and operations. She is 20 now and absolutely fine she was signed off at 5 and had her last cast taken off when she was 13 month.
If you hold both legs down and slightly twist inwards you are looking for the creases on each leg to match on both sides. Regards catching it early I was told that the test is only as good as the person doing it. I expressed my concerns at her birth and was told all was ok but it wasn't.
At the time i was so upset but looking back there is so much more that can happen that can't be fixed and she is absolutely fine now with no issues whatsoever. I'm due again in 2 weeks with a girl so I am a bit nervous that she will have it too like her sisters but I'll just take it as it comes and hopefully she will be fine.
I hope all is ok if you need any further info or advise please feel free to message me

@Dipsy77 thank you for replying 🙂
As the previous post said I have stepped away from Google, that is just giving me worst case scenario's and the likelihood is if it even is hip dysplasia it doesn't mean it will end up being as bad as the cases I'm reading about.
We've had a doctors appointment and he observes the creases are uneven but cannot feel anything suspicious. He's referred us to hospital for a scan, I just wish they'd hurry it along as the earlier she is diagnosed the sooner treatment can start!
I've recently discovered someone on her dad's side of the family has hip issues but I'm not sure if it's an isolated problem or part of a bigger disability. I will update when we find out more. Thank you for replying 😁

I'm sure she will be fine with my second daughter it was very obvious one leg was shorter than the other and her creases were uneven down the front of her legs. Hope everything goes ok xx

Chlochlo52 · 11/09/2019 15:51

Just an update, scan was this morning and everything looked as it should be with no signs of dysplasia, I'm so relieved 🙂
@Dipsy77 Best of luck to you with your little one (you may have had her by now) at least with them being aware of it if there are any issues you will have it dealt with promptly, fingers crossed she will be fine though xx
