Baby chewing hands and crying

Caroline3033 · 03/08/2019 23:36

My 8 week old son has begun crying inconsolably and shoving his fingers in his mouth and chewing them, many times each day. He also rubs his face a lot. This is not just when he is hungry (if he is, he will feed quite happily). It seems too early for teething and I can't see any sign of teeth coming through. Does anybody have any idea what this could be?

Infants have growth spurts and one is around 6 to 8 weeks. They are usually more hungry and fussier and personally mine wanted to nurse constantly. While some babies do teeth that early,it's not super common. If you continue to be concerned I'd give his dr a call.I know these early and new stages can be tough. It does get easier,I promise❤
*I am not a medical professional, just a mom of 3,now teenagers. And I absolutely loved those baby days and try to help new moms when possible🤗

A growth spurt is a good shout. I wouldn't rule out teething, although not common, our first set at the bottom were at 3.5 months, and we were not expecting it at all. Aside from chewing hands, the main sign we had was drooling. So so much drooling.

My baby is 9 weeks and is doing the same!
Chewing my shoulder and her own fists. I think shes teething as I can see a white bump on her bottom front gum.
Shes also not taking as much milk (ff) which is apparently another sign of teething
She is also crying and its a pain cry :(
I took her doctors today for diarrhea and he looked at her gums and agreed could be teething causing the chewing and crying etc

The teeth take many weeks to come up through the gums and of course start and stop in their transition. One of mine broke a tooth at 4 months but was chewing away and slobbering for weeks before this. Also could be reflux? Does he sleep ok? Speak to your GP or health visitor though if you are concerned.

Could absolutely be teething. My DS2 started at 5 weeks

I saw the GP for his 8 week check up and vaccinations yesterday. She dismissed the idea of teething without even looking. But then, the midwife told me he didn't have a tongue-tie and it turned out he did. I'm losing faith in these people Confused

Hi. My son started teething at 5 weeks and although I couldn't see any white bumps or red gums, it soon became apparent that he was teething.

He would chew his fist, arms and chew into my shoulder and there was a lot of drooling and him touching his cheeks.

I got a teething toy, the one that goes into the fridge, and would hold it for him to chew on and this really helped! I felt he was a bit too young for the gels as they say 3+ months so I had to use natural things like the teething toys and rubbing his cheeks for him.

I'm pretty sure that my son was teething from near birth as he would chew my nipple off while breastfeeding. He also had a full set of baby teeth by the time he was about 8 months old!

His gums were very hard from about a week old and the HV did say she thought he was going to get teeth very early

Sounds like teething. Try a teething toy and some bonjela to see if that helps relieve the hand chewing Smile
