TBH my ds always held a spoon when I started to wean him - I even have photos of him holding a spoon when I was feeding him babyrice. He eventually started using the spoon from the age of about 9 months - very messy business!! Just give you ds a spoon to feed at the same time and be patient, she'll soon learn

ds1 at 10/11 months. ds2 is 13 months now and will eat from a loaded spoon, but does not know how to scoop anything up himself yet - totally un-coordinated.... She will get there in the end.

she will hold her fork or spoon and usually just waves it about. she has always been behind picking things up, and has her 21month or whatever it is check up in october, the one where shes suppose to stack up blocks, which she cant do. but she isnt always particularly fussed about her food. shes does feed herself finger foods so i dont think it would be so much of a problem, is it?

my ds loves to eat from his spoon (he's one) well i will correct that he will eat two mouth fulls with his spoon eat half with his fingers and then use me as target practice with the rest tammy if she can eat finger food and the main thing is shes eating i wouldnt worry to much about it

Ballpark aim for mine was spoon-feeding themselves weetabix by 18 months which I think they all managed. DD IIRC was a bit of a struggle but we finally got it; DS2 (now 17mo) was always very keen on feeding himself and is now very good with a spoon.

But that's just me; I wanted them to do it so I could get on with everything else in the mornign! (I have 3 under 6).

Tammybear if she is feeding herself I wouldn't get too worried about the spoon itself. How is her co-ordination otherwise? Can she do a shape-sorter/liftout jigsaw etc?

If you are worried about that aspect mention it to yr HV.

Dd loved to wave a spoon around as a baby but she didn't use one herself until she was over 2 - she's now 3 and a half and uses knife, fork and spoon like a pro. HV was worried about it at her 21 month check up and suggested that we give her a fork rather than a spoon, which worked for us. Doesn't really work for breakfast cereals though ... but once she got the hang of spearing things with her fork using the spoon came very quickly.

TB, I have exatly the opposite problem, he can feed himself with a spoon since 10m, but won't dare to touch the food with his hans, I can only feed him with "spoonable" food otherwise he won't eat, so no finger food at all...

ds was 9 months old when I realized he could feed himself with a spoon: I never tought him in fact, he just took the spoon off my hand and started feeding himself, he gets quite upset if I try to feed him!

I must reveal though, that far from being a genious he goes to nursery, where they tought him, and they let him be as messy as he wants to be. On the other hand I must admit I was just too happy to feed him and keep the kitchen clean and never even tried... fat chance now he is 16 months and will only eat if I give him a spoon.

And you should see the state of my kitchen
