not a nutter
tis a good strategy
I count backwards from 1000 (admittedly not out loud) when I'm stressed and can't sleep

Saturn74 · 30/07/2007 16:38

Sounds like a great relaxation technique.
But if you go in and he has got up to 127,654 then read the poor lad a story, will ya!

clumsymum · 30/07/2007 16:38

Wow, self-hypnosis at an early age.

I think it sounds great, if it works don't knock it. If he can do this now, he'll probably be great at handling stress when he's older.

Ah, counting sheep - bless! Does he watch Wallace & Gromit?
My ds sings to himself. Currently the Numberjacks theme tune morning and night.

I used to count vases on a table to get to sleep

Who was the man who used to hypnotise frogs??

callmeovercautious · 30/07/2007 20:02

Someone will have told him about counting Sheep. I remember very clearly trying this at about 4 years old and it did not work (mainly because I was so excited about all the fluffy ickle Lambs in my head )

My Mum thought I was a bit odd until I told her what I was doing and that she should go away so I could start again as she had interrupted me!

mamama · 30/07/2007 20:18

No, I do it too.

Or maybe that makes us both nuttters. Either way, it helps, so who cares?!

hunkermunker · 30/07/2007 20:19

DS1 sings 5 little monkeys, jumping on the bed to himself. Which is similar, I suppose.

katierocket · 30/07/2007 20:32

DS1 does this sort of - he counts things on the wall. I think it's the way he switchs himself off IFYKWIM

deaconblue · 30/07/2007 21:49

I count all the time. I count in multiples of 5 though - even more nutty!

deaconblue · 30/07/2007 21:50

oh it's you! I'm thrilled that ds3 is a counter too. Makes me like the little chap even more than I did already

Budababe · 30/07/2007 21:56

Definitely a freak.

How do I know this?

'Cos I do it too!

Budababe · 31/07/2007 09:40

Didn't work for me last night though.

Woke at 2.30 and was still awake at 6am.

Tried reading. Tried counting. No joy.

Am now tired.

mamama · 31/07/2007 17:16

OH no Budababe, that's no good. Could you try doubling numbers? 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 etc...

I am so glad I came back to this thread and saw that I am in good company. I like multiples of 5 too but not for going to sleep.

Not a freak. Honest.

pagwatch · 31/07/2007 19:39

DS1 used to stand quite still when I was telling him off and i started to notice a slightly tuned out expression and then eventually noticed his lips moving. When we discussed it it emerged that he counted in his head so he didn't have to listen and he apparently knew that it usually took about 22..
Now aged 14 def very bright and absoloutely not a weirdy.

scattyspice · 31/07/2007 19:41

LOL pagewatch.

DS counts (make explosions) to get to sleep and DD sings!

And they share a room.

I am a nutter too then - tis a great antidote to MOTNI (middle-of-the-night-insomnia)

deaconblue · 31/07/2007 19:51

My multiples of 5 are generally for walking along the street. Each pace is 5 until I get to 100 then I start again. No idea why but I can't remember ever not doing it.
