Help! Can't get my LO into her buggy!

Or highchair come to that. DD has hit 12 months and turned into a raging toddler! Soooooo willful and will arch back and refuse to get in buggy when it suits her. I am sure I saw on some programme on TV about kids that there is a way to put them in, a way to hold them so they can't fight you? Anyone know or can offer advice!

Where has my little baby gone????? Turned into a toddler overnight!

distraction techniques.... "oooh, look at this lovely [ ]" and whilst distracted for split second you, like lightning, whizz her into the highchair or car seat and strap her in good and tight!!!

My ds was the same. In the end, had to tempt him with one of those pram book things on a curly tie. he wasn't allowed to look at it until he was sat fastened in the pram. It worked for a while. Just waiting to go through the same with dd - I know it's just around the corner!

I think it is this week's full moon! My DS 11 months has been a horror for the first time this week. Goes rigid as soon as I attempt to put him in the car seat and push chair. WHere has this year gone! Can't believe that he has become like this so quickly, am sure his sister was different.... good luck with the battles btw!

Lostmykeys · 29/07/2007 21:27

Oh and another thing! Changing his blasted nappy, virtually have to pin him down while he screams the place down as he doesn't want to lie there!

my dd2 has just started doing this at 19 months.i have been through it with ds2 and i just smile and tell her she isnt a patch on him when it comes to the back-arching thing.i just put my arm accross her body to stop her falling out while i put the straps over her shoulders, then very quickly do them up before she has a chance to slide out.i also saty calm and dont speak, and if she escapes i just pick her up and start again.

as for nappy changing,i have always used disposables so i switched to pull-ups when she was about 12 months.i can get the poo nappy off+clean bum with one hand now,i think i developed that skill with the mad ds2.

its when they start school that you wonder where the time went

Lostmykeys · 29/07/2007 21:40

Blimey! Forgot all about pullups this time round. (DD was perfect, DS has been sent to test me). Will be buying pullups from now on.

Yes, the heady days of getting into a sweaty stressed out mess whilst trying to get DS into the car seat are over and it's gone in the blink of an eye. Now I say, hop in kids, seat belts on? let's go!

Be reassured that they are all the same and they will all stop when they are a bit bigger. It's a battle of wills, you know you are going to win but it's a bit stressful getting there!

WideWebWitch · 29/07/2007 21:41

Yes, distract.

I have always found my knee very helpful with pushchairs and nappy changing as it gives a free hand to deal with flailing arms etc nb do not sit on your children

MaeBee · 30/07/2007 08:49

might sound odd, but my lo (10mths now) ALWAYS hated his buggy. he still will battle if we put him in it inside the house, but if he goes into it once we are out the door he's fine. i guess he doesn't mind if he knows he's going somewhere and whats going on. i also always give him a bit of pear or satsuma (bad mum, bribing, i know, i know, chastise me....) but it works!

ChasingSquirrels · 30/07/2007 08:51

To get LO into buggy - knee gently in groin, keeps them down while you strap them in.

UniSarah · 30/07/2007 20:54

Bribery?

Difers · 30/07/2007 21:31

Never give in - they prey on your weakness No seriously - get them to hold something with both hands - they can't multitask - small toys, keys, beaker. For the car seat hold them with their knees and hips bent as you put them in and place your elbow on the car seat seat and forearm and spread hand across their chest whilst you put the straps on, try to talk really nicely to them even if the WHOLE car park has their hands poised on their mobiles ready to call Social Services. This is because it is difficult for them to go into extensor spasm when they are looking straight ahead at you. Hopefully use a calm moment to click them safely in. Good Luck.

chipmonkey · 30/07/2007 21:32

I tickle ds3, he can't hold himself rod-straight while being tickled! Then very quickly strap him in.

potoroo · 30/07/2007 21:45

Two hands and a knee I find. Sounds not very nice but it doesn't hurt him, he just can't get around it.

Thanks for suggestions!
