21 month old development ? Normal ?

My 21 month old boy started walking at 15 months, he has a dummy but only during bed time. He is amazing and such a happy boy. I have a few concerns re his speech, and worried about it.

He will only say few words, here is a list, can someone tell me this is normal :

  • Says all animal sounds when you say the animal name to him
  • counts from 1 to 10
  • Says Mummy, Daddy , Mo Mo ( monkey )
  • says book
  • says yeah / no and knows which concept to use both words in
  • says hiya and bye
  • shows a lot of emotion when hugging , says 'ahhhhhh'
  • gives kisses and blows kisses
  • says bubbles.

That is a complete list, I mean I assumed he would be saying more things by now, he goes to Nursery full time and is very sociable and interactive and confident, and when I am with him I am always talking to him and reading books and pointing out colors and words and objects. But I would think a solid 10 words for him at the moment. He understands most instructions ; come here, get your shoes, sit down, stand up, turn around, sing, dance, wash hands, clean teeth, take shoes off, take socks off, say thank you, stop,.

I guess I am comparing him to other children of his age at Nursery who can say a lot more.

Thank you xx

It all sounds very normal, some of it quite advanced (i.e. counting to 10). Animal sounds and approximations count as words meaning that his actual word count is probably closer to 20 which is more than expected at 21M.

Children develop differently. Some kids speak very clearly at that age and can even combine several words, some may not say more than mommy and daddy. Everything within the normal range. Especially if he's continuously developing.
Sometimes they can even make big steps at once, like suddenly saying 5 new words every day or suddenly speaking much clearer.
