2.5 year old & managing his behaviour

Since DS2 arrived, 6 months ago, DS1 has been a nightmare.

I was in hospital for a week with DS2 and only saw DS1 once in that week - I basically disappeared during the night and he had no clue where I was. DS2 and I were transferred to another county hence the lack of contact with DS1.

Anyway, since, DS1 behaviour at home and nursery has gone rapidly downhill. One minute he'll be loving his brother, smiling and kissing him and the next he'll be biting, scratching his face, pushing, and head butting. He is also aggressive with me. Hits me often especially when I say no.

Behaviour at nursery is pushing other children, hitting etc.

When we meet with friends, if their children are younger than DS1, then I can't trust him with them. He will push and hit for no reason.

He gets irrationally angry if any younger child is crying even if it's nothing to do with him. He will target the child who was crying.

I am at the end of my tether. I can't stand him hurting his brother. Please can anyone share some amazing behaviour management so I can get through this. I am really really struggling.

No solutions, but didn’t want to leave you with no response. That sounds incredibly tough. There are lots of books on helping siblings adjust, it sounds like he’s really distressed about new baby. Do you have stories to read with him about having siblings? Can you role play it with him some time to help him express feelings he doesn’t have words for yet?

Thank you for the reply!

We have the one book about having a new baby - was just reading it to him actually - he's more interested in pressing the sound button 🙄 but will keep going and will have a look for some others; thank you for that.

I'm not sure he's got the comprehension for role play yet but it's worth a try. Maybe I can make his Dad play it out with me - he'll be delighted.

He's so much better for his Dad. Drives me mad 😩
