Help - how should I deal with a 21mnth toddler who squeals when unhappy

My DS tends to squeal so ear piercing loudly when we tell him not to do something or that he can't have something. He seems to use it instead of a full blown tantrum. In may respects its easier to deal with than a tantrum but we are never sure whether to say stop, or just ignore it - its very hard to ignore! Even DD aged 5 says its hurting her ears!

i've tended to go with a calm ' i need to hear your nice voice or ... can't happen/ will happen' but i don't think that sinks in for a few more months - it does stop though as they can talk more they need it less - wehining should come soon!

There must be an inbuilt scream mechanism that automatically triggers when they hit 21months!!

Ds has also just started doing this. So far we are taking the ignoring it approach, which really involves walking out of the room and going "aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhh stop that horrendous noise" in an extremely quiet yet screamy voice.
