My son refuses to feed himself with a spoon. Is this normal?

My ds2 is 13 months old. He has fed himself finger food from 6 months but he has no idea what to so with a spoon. Sometimes when I load the spoon up with food he will take it off me and feed himself. He however, has never loaded the spoon up himself and seems to have no idea what to do with it and no co-ordination at all. The concept of scooping food up with a spoon seems to be completely beyond him.
Has anyone else's taken ages to use a spoon for themselves? Don't know why I should be worried about this, but I am (a bit)!!

My ds1 is 3.5 and still refuses to use cutlery, other than for cereal. I think 13 months is pretty good going for co-ordinating loaded spoon into mouth, and personally I wouldn't worry.
Perhaps you could play at scooping things other than food, eg bricks with a cup, so he gets the idea, then do the same at tea time with his spoon.

please dont worry evanmom. Give him a spoon anyway so that he gets used to holding it, even if it's in the wrong hand, but the main thing at this age is that he enjoys the eating experience and you dont want him to sense that you are stressed about him not spooning things up.
I used to worry about DS always just using fingers but now, at 3, he is more than capable of using a spoon and fork and even a knife but he still sometimes chooses to use his hands.
Try and relax about it and just enjoy mealtimes with him.

My ds is 18 months and can only eat from a spoon if it's loaded up for him, so you are not allowed to worry until I do okay. He took until his 1st birthday to work out finger food, and a cup. He also won't load up a trowel with sand in a sandpit, but if you do it for him will put it into the bucket. I am telling myself they are obviously 2 different skills and he will get the second one at some point down the track. I will let you know when he gets it.

my son is 5 and still loves me spoon feeding him even though he can happily feed himself!

OMG I didn't realise he was supposed to be able do this so early! DS is 12 mnths and he has only ever put a loaded spoon is his mouth a couple of times without me guiding him. Even then he sometimes has a hissy fit and tries to grab the spoon from me so he can flick the food around and then throw the spoon.

What age are they supposed to be able to feed themselves with cutlery??

Gosh ... I don't think DS fed himself with a spoon until he was about 2 and a half. I wouldn't let him ... far too messy
Seriously ... 13 months is far too early to worry about that - just give him a spoon to play with while you feed him and he will get it eventually!
