Am I weaning right?

Hello :)

I have a baby boy at 6 months, we started the weaning stage about a week before he turned 6 months, he’s been brilliant with it! I’m still unsure on exactly how much should we be giving him though?
Currently his morning feed is bottle only at 10oz, afternoon I give him half a jar off food and 9oz bottle then dinner half a jar and 9oz and last bottle is 10oz. He seems happy with that so I’ve been continuing with that but when he visits his grans they seem to think it’s odd i give him a jar and a bottle at the same time, it’s like a wee 15 mins in between jar and bottle.

If he seems happy then continue my own way or space the jars and bottles out a bit
More?

Also,
The grans seem to think giving him the wee baby yoghurts like petit fuilos (sorry can’t spell) and baby hipp apple juice is the norm at this stage? My argument is that it has sugar that he doesn’t need, is 1 or 2 a week acceptable or just avoid altogether?

Many thanks :)

Wow sounds like your doing really well hun😃 when I weaned my eldest he needed a good hour/half and a half gap between any bottle and food otherwise he would just be sick.

But if your little one is keeping it down and seems happy then I wouldn’t worry just go with it. He would somehow let you know if it wasn’t suiting him.

I do think 10oz is a lotttt of milk though! You could give him a little less milk and then his solid food to see if he eats more than what he would if he wasn’t as full from the milk. Then if he still wants the milk after give him it.

As for yoghurts I would say definitely as a treat. But stay clear of the branded juices there crammed with crap!! Just stick to water xx

No need to give him flavoured yoghurt or juice (which as you say has unnecessary sugar in it) - plain Greek yoghurt is full of calcium and often cheaper. It's better not to encourage too much of a sweet tooth as it can make it harder for him to accept other flavours. You can always give him some soft fruit with it if you want to add some flavour, as the fruit will have useful nutrients in it (e.g. a bit of banana with some Greek yoghurt would be a healthy dessert).

As he's 6 months, he could also try some finger food - the sooner he gets practising with it, the better. Bits of omelette, bits of toast, soft steamed veg (e.g. steamed carrot sticks or broccoli florets), bits of fruit etc are all good options. It can be a bit messy but it will make your life a lot easier once he can feed himself a bit (I used to just put newspaper on the floor to catch the worst of it). It doesn't matter if he doesn't eat a huge amount of this stuff yet, but getting used to holding food and trying different textures is really useful.

In terms of amounts, I got a really helpful wallchart from Ella's Kitchen (I think I just had to sign up to their mailing list) which had suggested foods and amounts. It's quite puree-oriented (and my daughter wasn't very keen on spoon-feeding) so I didn't follow it strictly, but I found it helpful to have some guidance about quantities.

Thanks for the advice! Both advice are really helpful! I did think 10oz is too much so I will cut down on the milk and I will stick with water rather than these baby!

Much love X

Definitely avoid juice as long as possible. Much better to have some fruit.

Do you offer a beaker of water with meals? It takes a lot of practice to drink from a beaker but a handy skill to have.

At 6 months you can also give fingers foods for them to practice self feeding.

When I started to wean my DD I used to give her a little water in a sippy cup so she could practice. I don’t think they recommend giving juice now but I was born it used to be recommended (I think to keep baby regular) To be honest it’s much easier if you baby will drink water rather than juice with a meal

Tbh I didn’t think finger food got introduced until later on, I’ve just been sticking with purées! I wish health visitors came out just before the weaning stage as I really wasn’t that sure and my mum and mil would feed him a Sunday roast if they could....

Yeah I have a beaker for him, he’s not so fond off water but I’ll keep trying him with it lol

Yeah the juice won’t be happening, the grans are just too excited about introducing new tastes to him I think lol
