AM ASTOUNDED ! Health Visitor has just done DD's 2yr check...

WOW !

I'm totally astounded by DD's (2y 1m) 2yr developmental assessment. I suspected that she was 'above her age range' in some things but the results have been really surprising. They are

Manipulative - Age appropriate.

Visual - Age Appropriate

Hearing & Language - Age Appropriate

Self-Care Social - 30 months

Locomotor (Running/walking/climbing stairs etc) - 36 months / 3 years

Interactive Social - 48 months / 4 years

Speech and Language - 60 months / 5 years !!!

I really am astounded at the last 2.

But as well as being exceedingly proud of my little girl, it does have practical benefits when it comes to schooling. She will be one of the youngest in her year, due to her August birthday, so it reassures me that she is unlikely to be 'left behind' by the school work.

I'm aware that these sorts of threads have some under attack by some MN'ers for being boastful or elitist, but please just take this is in the spirit it is meant - A post from a proud Mummy

That's one in the eye to all those 'Daily Mailers' who slag off young mothers .

Thanks all , I knew my assertive and 'gobby' side would have value someday !

I've booked her into nursery for 2 sessions a week, but she won't be able to start until October as the nursery stagger their intake. I feel much more confident that she will cope better whilst there. I'll ask them about offering a more 'advanced' play/learning structure, thanks for the tip lisalisa

I am astounded that you GET 2 yr checks! Where I live you get nothing after 1 yr.

Well doen to you and your DD

We have a 2 year check but nothing as comprehensive as yours sound. They just asked us basic questions and asked if her immunisations were up to date. HV was very impressed with DD's language skills and recorded it, but nothing was really looked at in details at all.

Hula, the HV was here for about 30mins and had a whole box full of toys/apparatus. She asked DD a few questions and then went through things with me, questions etc. It didn't help that DD is full cold and was running a temp, but she seemed to be able to see 'through' the illness induced grump.

Where else can you be so frankly proud about your children's achievements and abilities (right across the spectrum) other than on Mumsnet! Well done to you both, she sounds a little smasher NdP

That's so lovely - she must be a real joy. Could I just add a tiny note of caution not to use this to raise your expectations of her too high? I was an "advanced" child, and my well-meaning parents used early signs to expect more of me all through my life than they might have. It makes it easy to disappoint when you don't perform at 110% Enjoy your daughter and give her every opportunity, but remind yourself once in a while that "average" achievements are also laudable.

Tartegnin (great name!) that is very interesting. I think my dh suffered in a simiilar way -was something of a child genius (allegedly!) but somehow failed to get it together in school.

Thanks for the advice. Have no fear, I haven't got DD pegged as a genius at 2 years old ! I've also got 2 older boys (12 & 10.5), one of whom is very able but very lazy and another who has dyslexia but always gives work 100%, so we're quite au fait with the 'do your best' approach

I, like Merrygoround, never had the chance to see how well my dd is performing. All I got for her 2 yr check was a letter from her health visitor and a questionnaire - apparently we know our children best so could we just fill out the form and return it but if we had any concerns we could meet with her. How exactly am I supposed to know if she is progressing "normally/abnormally" if I have nothing to gauge her against. I must admit I was somewhat annoyed the whole "can't be bothered" scene.

I had that for ds1's 3 yr check. I thought it was pretty poor to have just a questionnaire with about 5 questions on.
