Tongue tie?

DD has been noted to have tongue tie. Doesn't affect breastfeeding at all and she is gaining weight after initial loss. After doing some research I decided I'd like her to have it sorted to prevent it being a bigger op if it affects her in future and so it doesn't cause speech problems, but can only be referred if it's affecting feeding or there's no weight gain. Anyone else been in a similar situation or had a child and decided not to treat the tongue tie?

Hi. My little boy has a 'slight tongue tie' and a heart shaped tongue. I also have one and never knew! We decided to leave it as it wasn't affecting his feeding and im happy enough that mine hasn't affected anything including speech. He's only almost 7 months but we've had absolutely no problems so far. My friend had twins 4 weeks after me and both had tongue tie also. One of the twins in particular was struggling with bottles and was loosing a significant amount of milk from the side of her mouth. She was referred and they both had the procedure. She said it was very quick and thinks they suffered only mild discomfort. Within a few days the feeding had greatly improved.

I know that you can pay to have it done privately and it's around £200 I believe.

DD2 had a tongue tie noted at birth they said it was significant enough that if affected feeding they would refer.
We managed feeding by finding slightly different positions as she was gaining weight fine but making me sore.

Her speech has always been clear and now at almost 4 she's one of the more talkative and understandable in her class at nursery.

Another baby born into a group a friends a few weeks before also had a slight tie and they paid privately as the NHS wouldn't refer as there were no feeding issues, whether it made a difference is difficult to say.

Thank you for sharing 🙂
I'm not concerned with feeding at all as she latches on fine and no soreness etc, though she is gaining weight she is isn't gaining like my DS did but that could just be that she is going to be more petite.
Interestingly I have started expressing (to get her used to bottles for when I return to work) and have noticed she dribbles some of it out the sides of her mouth with the bottle but I had put that down to her just getting used to it. I may mention that and see what they say.
I don't think I'd go down the private route, I just don't want her to need the op at 2/3 years old when it could have been done easily as a baby. Will just have to wait and see!
