Baby's eyes different shape

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this with their baby. My boy was born with his left eye slightly more closed then his right. My hubby could never see it but I could. The Dr didn't seem fussed at all.
Yesterday I really really noticed it had changed, and even hubby agreed. I've read about ptosis but I don't think it's that as his eyelid isn't drooping.

Any assistance or experience is appreciated!

My DS had something similar but was due to his plagiocephaly so his face wasn’t symmetrical. This has improved massively, and naturally, just as he has grown and his skull has better aligned :)

Loulh · 10/05/2019 17:17

That's great that it's improved.
I nabbed a Dr appt today and she confirmed it's not ptosis, but didn't give any further insight other than he may grow out of/in to it... Which is great news but still not an answer Confused

we have the same with my son, 6m old now but his one eye was smaller since birth. All the health visitors and two different GPs said it’s mild and does not pose a problem but I was not convinced. It is usually because of plagiocephaly and there are private clinics specialising on this subject, who makes cranial checks for free and advise based on metrics. Everyone had said my son had only a flat spot maybe but he was diagnosed on severe plagiocephaly/brachycephaly border and we will start using a helmet next week.

You can take him to those clinic for a free assessment. Search for timband or ahead for babies, both are free for first assessment, though I must say helmet is quite expensive if you must go down that way.

Maybe your baby doesn’t have anything really, but just wanted to share my experience, in case you can also notice any flatness on his head. Best of luck!

Loulh · 11/05/2019 19:21

Thank you for sharing your experience. The Dr checked his head and there's no flatness, also no issues with his eye socket.

Good for you for following through with your instincts. I'm going to play it week by week unless I see a negative change

Everyone's a bit asymmetrical. I would never have looked at you ds's photos and noticed anything at all. If you point it out then you can notice a slight difference but I would have imagined this is the case with most people. I'm sure there's nothing wrong.

HennyPennyHorror · 12/05/2019 01:51

My DD2 had this and she was it turned out, suffering from a squint...a turn in her eye but "without the turn" visible.

Sounds odd but you know when you see a child with one eye looking the wrong way? Well she had the same muscle weakness as that but some anomaly made it that her eye didn't turn.

Some kids with this still need to be patched as the smaller eye is weaker....DD didn't...but she needs glasses.

Thank you ladies for your input. First time parenting is a field of worry lol. I appreciate you all responding. Xx

OP I understand your concerns, but as others have said our bodies are not entirely symmetrical. I have feet of completely different sizes.
Looking at the pictures it doesn't look like an eye issue, there is a slightly thicker area of tissue/fat under the left eye.

Baby's faces change so much in the first year or two of life I am sure it will be unnoticable soon.

HennyPennyHorror · 12/05/2019 06:50

Speak nobody here is qualified to tell OP not to worry. She needs to take her baby to an optician.

Somuchroom · 12/05/2019 13:05

Yeah I would probably ask for a referral to an optometrist. Wether or not you will get one via the NHS is a different thread entirely. I have a lazy eye myself that was ignored/missed until a very late age and by then there was nothing that could be done. I am hyper vigilant with my own dc and wouldn’t hesitate to demand a referral to the eye unit if he presented like this. Good luck.

Hello maam is there any update regarding to your kid eyes?i noticed my son eyes same like your kid. did u know what is it? please notice me. Thanks

Duggeeismysaviour · 08/10/2020 20:33

I was borderline-obsessed by this when my now 10 month old DD was born

Basically the eye is smaller BUT the disparity has become almost invisible some days now she's older, just more evident when she is tired.

More than this, I have started to look and sooo many adults, kids, even friend's babies have eyes of differing sizes (from photos- I dont stare at them!!) Some are quite marked. Once you start looking, you won't be able to stop seeing it

HI! Can I ask how your baby's eyes are today? I'm in the same situation, my daughter has very asymmetrical eyes and no one can give me answers.
I would be very grateful for an answer!!!

Honestly start looking, everyone had this. It's just way more obvious in small babies without hair etc. Honestly! Plus, it's SO subtle in your baby, I wouldn't have noticed had you not said

My little one (who I wrote about on this thread- now 3.5)- is perfect and you cannot notice it now!

Yes I know that everyone has small facial asymmetries, but my daughter has really big difference in eye shape, this worries me.
We have already made a visit to the ophthalmologist and thank God no problems have arisen.
Now I wonder if she will always have this weird look…

PrinceAli1 · 18/07/2023 23:25

Now I'm worried about my baby's eyes! Is this size difference obvious to any of you?

Veronica, di you ever find out what was causing this different in your LO's eyes? and did it sort itself out?

AnnonymousMum · 06/04/2024 12:09

My son is 11 and has always had asymmetrical eyes and I've always wondered about this. He gets migraines and I asked the paediatrician if there was any link once and she said it's just a normal amount of variation in symmetry and nothing to be concerned about.
