Ds is shy, anything we can do?

Hiya,

Recieved ds' school report (well, more a chat from his playgroup, he is 3), and we were told that everthing is fine, apart from he is really shy.

TBH, when we are with my ds, he doesn't act shy, but in school he is more of a watcher than a do-er.

Is there anything we can do,or is he just a shyand quiet child.

Proud mammy moment - we were told that ds is a plesent to teach, and that they can trust ds to be good when they are dealing with other children

Hiya jofeb04,
My dd 2.6 is a right little chatterbox at home but take her to soft play areas with other kids or anywhere with adults she doesn't know and she's soo shy too. she sits and watches all the other kids running around and it takes her a while before she's brave enough to join in, usually it's just as we're about to leave I don't think it's a bad thing being shy with adults but with children it's different. we're thinking of sending her to a playgroup or nursery so she'll learn to mix. maybe it's just a confidence thing with your son. how long's he been going to playgroup? maybe he's just taking everything in before he decides who he wants to play with. it's great that he's pleasant to teach. I know I get comments all the time about my daughter's very good behaviour so maybe it's not all bad
Apparantly I was shy at that age and now I'm always being told to be quiet My mum thinks it's funny that I was so shy just be patient. I came out of my shell when I started infant school no idea why.

Grrr. He's not shy. He is three!

So many children are lacking in confidence at this age. It's a survival mechanism in my view; they need to have those feelings of not wanting to venture out into the blue yonder because at 3 they need looking after and nurturing!

Please don't get drawn in by this for one minute. He will gain confidence as he gets older. Even if he didn't, and remained 'shy', that is not necessarily a problem for him. You can be shy but have very good self esteem and strength of character.

i think just pay him lots of attention and praise, just general positive parenting, and that is absolutely all you can do.

He sounds delightful and like he has settled extremely well at nursery. So don't worry about him at all!
