14 month old hitting his own head!

My 14mo DS often hits himself on the head or uses a hard plastic toy to hit his own head. It seems fairly hard! He will got on his forehead or the side of his head. He is otherwise in good health but quite wriggly and fidgety, and generally curious and active. In case it's relevant he has recently cut his front teeth and doesn't have any signs of ear infection etc, this has been going on a few weeks. Anyone had similar and any idea if this behaviour is normal?!

Head banging in young children is actually quite common. Don't react just go in and take the toy from him and walk away. He shouldn't be able to really cause himself any harm. But he will realise very quickly that he can control you with it if you go running in and make a fuss. Other than that you could put up an empty play pen and set him in it when he starts up.

My DS does this when he's teething. He's just finished cutting his first 4 molars and I've definitely seen an increase in things like this when a tooth is about to cut. He will also pull his ear, put his finger in his ear and scratch, rub his face etc. It's all normal.
