Toddler stools

Hi

Just wondered if anyone has had any similar experience of this, my little one is 2 (just) but he doesn’t do hard stools, only ever done it a handful of times. His stools are always soft (not diarrhoea loose) just paste like, half formed.

The HV told me to keep an eye on fruit intake (he loves fruit) but if it doesn’t improve to take him to the doctors. He’s a bit of a nightmare at times with food, quite fussy, but eats lots of finger foods and does eat meals (just not as much as finger foods)

I’m just wondering if it may be milk? I don’t know what the side effects of an allergy are but could it be he’s not digesting it properly as It’s only the consistent food/drink I can think of. That and he tends to always have one banana a day consistently.

I know toddler diarrhoea is a thing but he only poops once a day, or once every 2 days it’s not constant loose poops.

If anyone has any advice I would be grateful :)

I have similar, I never want to go down the allergy route as it's so complex, and i felt that as long as ds was happy,no tummy pains and growing, I wouldnt worry too much. That said, I saw on NHS site that some toddlers next extra low fibre diet (until maybe 4-5), so I cut out culprits like weetabix, brown breads etc. Hes had maybe 50% normal poops now, so I'm happy with that!

I think to your DS has the ideal stool, dry formed stools are a sign of constipation. My DS was the same, but since potty training poos less times a day, and therefore forms drier stools. He eats lots of fruit, but not a milk drinker as dislikes it.

Certainly certain fruits affect things like oranges 🍊 and kiwi seem to make things softer. And if he eats a lot of chips he seems to struggle. I guess quite dry & stodgy.

I really wouldn't worry.

It's better than being constipated but if you think things could be firmed up then encourage eggs, bananas, stewed apples, rice, toast. The BRAT diet.
