Trying to keep a 5 month old entertained

It’s like he constantly wants entertaining and I literally can’t leave him for a few mins as he starts whinging. I put him in his jumperoo or high chair with a few toys on the tray, to get a few things done, hoping he’ll entertain himself for a couple of mins. Inevitably he starts whinging and crying. I’m exhausted! I know having a baby is full on and it’s probably only going to get worse, but he literally wants one of us entertaining him constantly. I’m starting to resent him which I know is horrible, but I feel like I can’t even have a minute to make myself a sandwich. Oh and he does nap in the day but mostly on me and not for very long Sad

Sit him on a soft surface like rug with a few pillow around him so he doesn't tip over and fill a box with house hold items. Like a spatulA from the kitchen, ribbon, topper wear, a real metal spoon, literally anything you're ok with him putting in his mouth. He will sit there and explore and put everything in his mouth so make sure it's clean. It's great for his dev/ sensory etc. I'll post a link below so you get an idea. He'll stay interstices for a good while with that. Basically try to put as many different textured things and shapes in there

@spongecake I hear you! I'm in the exact same boat! Although thank god I've got him in a great napping routine, including a beautiful 2 hour lunch nap which waves my sanity. He just whinges all the time and want a constant entertainment from me!

I'd work on the naps first OP. Have a read of the No Cry Nap Solution Smile

Once you've cracked the naps, you might feel a bit less resentful.

Have you got a DH around this weekend? Definitely send him out for a couple of hours with LO if you can. Library, park, coffee shop, swimming are all good place for them to hang out together while you get a break.

If you want to make a sandwich, can you stick him in a high chair in the kitchen with a few toys?

@LegoCake did you mean to say something? Have you got laryngitis? Grin

LegoCake · 15/03/2019 17:46

Oh gosh so sorry I don't know where my post has gone! It does get harder but in a different way. In a way it is easier when they can entertain themselves for more than 2 seconds! I used to cart mine about with me and make up silly songs about what I was doing while I was pottering about. Maybe keep some toys on rotation so they're a bit more exciting. Hang on in there x

JiltedJohnsJulie · 15/03/2019 17:58

Rotating toys really forked for us too.

Try keeping a few in each room in a little basket if you can. Then if you wed to go and do something like put laundry away you can plonk him down and give him a couple of toys Smile
