STILL not in own room - problem?

I never intended us to be all in one room forever like 14th century peasants, but baby is now 14 months old and is still in with us. I followed the advice which said have the baby in with you until three months, but he was such a diabolical sleeper that it just dragged on and on - his own room is on a different floor because our house is tall and thin - and neither of us fancied running up and down stairs a million times a night. It was just easier to have him next to us while he was breastfeeding. Now he's sleeping through though it took nearly a year to get to that stage. In the morning he wakes up and sees us and smiles and we bung him in bed with us for a cuddle. It's really nice and husband and I have decided we don't mind him being in with us - apart from the total lack of privacy of course, which puts constraints on certain things!!! Does anyone else share a room with a baby this age or older, or have we gone completely the wrong way about this? Should we move him?

If you and DH are happy, then carry on what suits you best

GibbonInARibbon · 06/07/2007 20:50

My DD is in her own room but if everyone is happy why worry???
Don't give a thought to 'should be'

FrannyandZooey · 06/07/2007 20:51

We had ds in with us until he was 3. Lovely, isn't it?

GibbonInARibbon · 06/07/2007 20:52

Did you miss him when he went in his own room franny - I think I'd find it hard

Lullabyloo · 06/07/2007 20:52

yes.....i do
follow your heart & do what feels right for you & ds & not what everyone else feels you should be doing.

mankyscotslass · 06/07/2007 20:54

Littlest manky is 21 mths, and still in our room...mainly because we havent swapped eldest ds and dd rooms round. We will get round to it sometime before we put him in a bed not the cot...and tbh, I kind of like having my last baby near me....

FrannyandZooey · 06/07/2007 20:54

Yes the bed seemed really empty and the room just had no soul to it

I got over it

Lullabyloo · 06/07/2007 20:54

ds is 3 this month......
he has never had to cry to wake me ,i sense when he is poorly etc & get to see his wonderful smiley little face every morning & lots of cuddles

paolosgirl · 06/07/2007 20:55

One of my neighbours child still sleeps with her (DH is downstairs on the sofa) and the child is 7 . Said child cannot physically get herself off to sleep without her mum, and doesn't have a bedroom of her own. The parents don't seem to mind, and don't do anything to encourage otherwise.
I wouldn't worry about a 14 month old at all, but might think about moving him soonish - but that's only what I would do. You should do what suits you (but bear in mind the above 7 year old!!! )

doggiesayswoof · 06/07/2007 20:56

DD is nearly 3 and still in our room. There are practical reasons for this - she doesn't have a room yet - but I'm glad it's worked out like this in a lot of ways. Mornings are lovely.

DS is 16 months, still in with us with no sign of things changing soon. (No where else for him to go). I quite like it nowand will definitely miss him if/when he gets his own room.

francagoestohollywood · 06/07/2007 20:57

we shared our bedroom with ds until he was 26 months, for the same reasons as you do. He was an appalling sleeper as a baby, fed a lot in the night and we had a tall and narrow house. Then, when his sister was born, we bought a new cot to go in the downstair bedroom, he saw it and decided that it was going to be his "new" bedroom. so downstairs went ds and dd took his place in the cot in our bedroom. It was easy to share the room with him because he wasn't bothered by us keeping the light on to read before falling asleep.

GibbonInARibbon · 06/07/2007 20:57

room had no soul to it...I can see that

Glad it's ok now though

Sometimes I wish DD was still in with me - I love the way her face lights up when I go into her each morning.

francagoestohollywood · 06/07/2007 20:58

forgot to say went to her bedroom when we moved house, when she was 8 months.
