21 month old not talking

My 21 month old communicates only by pointing, nodding and shaking his head along with making some noises.

He can understand instructions and carry out tasks I ask him to do.

At what age do I need to look at getting him assessed?

He doesn't say any words at all other than no.

He knows who mummy and daddy are and can point to us when asked but he doesn't even say those words

Is baby boy or girl. Boy are slightly slower than girls in talking. Is he getting any interaction with other babies? Like in friends da/family or public places like libraries? Sometimes they follow others..

He is a boy. He has some friends that he sees about once a week.

He also has young cousins he sees regularly.

21 months is still quite young. Lots of children don’t talk much until they are 2.5 years. The fact that he is communicating non-verbally (pointing) and following instructions is important. Lack of communication at this age is what you need to look for and from your post this isn’t a problem. Keep an eye on things, but I wouldn’t be overly concerned at present.

Exactly what @magic has said - his non-verbal communication seems to be good, so I don't find lack of words (a this age) concerning at all.

My youngest didn't speak until she was 27 months. Before that she said maybe 3 or 4 words, no sentences, nothing. And then the language suddenly exploded! Health visitor wasn't worried at all and said it is within the 'normal' range up until 2.5.

Thank you all for such reassuring posts.

I will mention it when we get to the 2 year check and leave it at that
