Why does my 12.5 mo chuck his food on the floor?

I am not particularly stressed by this but just wondered if it is a developmental stage (like leaning about gravity or something - he has not yet had that Newtonian moment)?
He is a pretty good eater and I know he usually wants the food (tonight he even threw his banana and he loves those with a great passion). It often co-incides with filling his nappy (still quite a colicky baby).
Any ideas?

just a stage thing i think ds did it too around this age and would smile and say "gone"

Because he's discovered that he can.

He's learning; he's discovered cause and effect all by himself, and it's fun to find that it does it every single time.

Just keep repeating the mantra ... it's just a phase, it's just a phase, it's just a phase ...

My DD (2) chucks any food she doesn't want on the floor. If she's eaten all the food, she chucks the plate on the floor.

Maybe you're right and it's a physics thing, as opposed to horrible little cow which is what i think when she does it

my ds did it too.......especially when he learnt to say 'floor'....

How long does the phase last?
DP gets quite cross! DS smiles and points at the table!!!

Ds smiles because he's been clever and made the food land on the floor again. He doesn't know you don't like it.

You can tell him no if you want, but it often turns it into a game - I found it was best to put a waterproof sheet under the highchair, and completely ignore it.

Honestly, it will pass. But if you make a fuss about it, it will only last longer.

Coz he has discovered the law of gravity?
Coz he likes to see mummy grovelling around wiping up?
Coz it is fun?

DS would (and almost a year later, still does) dangle food over the side of his chair, look me in the eye, wait for me to say "please don't throw food", drop it, look very surprised and say "Gone? GONE!".

Now he pre-empts it with a quick shake of his head and a short sharp "Nope" followed by a very dramatic "Oh noooooo" in a 'mummy-I-can't-believe-my-food-just-fell-on-the-floor' tone

He then gives a naughty little chuckle, shoves some food in his mouth and repeats the whole thing.

Be happy it's just this, the next stage is spitting food out.

seriously now, because hes a year old and thats what he feels like doing!

i agree with what WigWamBam said, they longer you react, the longer he'll do it.
it's the very beginning of the whole testing the boundaries.
it will pass (unto other new stages!)

It may well be 'just a phase' but this has been a very looooong onge and shows no sign of ending!
