Swimming at 5 months

Hi
I was just wondering if taking my baby to swimming lessons at five months was worth it?

I just figured, they don't technically learn to swim, it just gets them used to being in the water doesn't it? So rather than spending so much money on the lessons, is it just as beneficial to take to them to the local swimming pool for a splash around?

Thanks! Smile

Just take them yourself. Mine didn't do swimming lessons until age 3

Yeh I was thinking that but just wondered people's views/experiences to help with my decision! Smile

I started taken dd swimming at 6 weeks. And started waterbabies at 6 months old.

She's just about to turn 1 and loves the water, goes under water, sits on the side and leans in to us

I started water babies at 5 months and still go weekly at 16 months. Her confidence in the water is amazing and we love to have a weekly activity now I work part-time. Other than the faff of getting wet and dressed slightly more annoying in the winter with all the clothes it's great x

Otherwise it's great.

I take my little one to a swimming group once a week. He is 11 weeks old and loves it!x

Thanks!
Wingingeverything whereabouts do you take your little one and how much is it? Just wondering as I can't find a class cheaper than £18 for half hour! Extortionate 🙄🙄

I took mine to aquatots13 weeks. Did one class and asked for (and got!) a refund. The instructor was shouty and overwhelmed the poor babies... even picked one crying baby to demonstrate! There was no way I was going to let her dunk my son in week 3!! So I take him myself now to a local swimming pool. He's really chilled out when it's just me and him (obviously there are others in the pool but I mean it's not part of a class). There was one baby in the clsss who was loving it so it was perfect for her but not for my son... plus I found it mega stressful! I'll take him to lessons when I think he's ready for them. I didn't set foot in a pool until I was 5 and I'm an ex county champion!

Thanks surreygirl! I kind of agree with that, I never went swimming until I was five and love the water so I don't get all the hype with the swimming lessons when they're six months!! It's not like they'll be avid swimmers by the time they're one is it. I understand it gets them used to the water but we can go our local swimming pool for that. Thank you! Smile

I take him to a local orivate pool. It is £10.50 a lesson which will get cheaper as he gets older.x
