Not sitting, crawling or even rolling over at nearly 9 months old

I am looking for some advice if possible. My DS is nealry 9 months old and is not sitting up, crawling or rolling over. Should I be concerned? Have any other parents had this? I spoke to my health visitor yesterday who said he should be doing all those things and may need physio if he doesn't do it soon. She accused me of leaving him in his cot all day (which I definately do not do) He has a play gym, he sits in his highchair (which we recline for him) and he has a baby walker and we also sit on a blanket in the lounge and I try and encourage him but it has not happened. The health visitor has worried me a lot. Please help!

I would also see the GP and ask a referral- it just seems the sensible route to me. best scenario would be your DS is absolutely clear and then you would be reassured; even if he wasn't wouldn't you want to know now, early intervention being so important in long term prognosis and all that?

chocolateteapot · 28/06/2007 14:15

I'm with those who feel that it is a good idea to see your GP at this point, it's the not sitting bit that I think I would want looked at if I were you. As Peachy says, hopefully you will be reassured that everything is fine, but just in case it isn't, it is better to get seen sooner rather than later.

Piglet, just to let you know you are not alone. DD will be 10 months on Saturday & shows no signs of wanting to sit indepandantly. I took her to the GP yesterday who has got us a referral. GP said the wait might be 1 to 2 months but she gave me the option of seeing a padeatician for a one off private consult and then being put back into the NHS system from there. Might be an option for you to consider as well.

Send me an IM if you want to keep in touch during this process. I know how worried I've been (so I won't tell you not to worry) & even though DD is reaching ever other milestone, it does concern me that she is not sitting.

Izabella · 28/06/2007 19:34

Sorry just realised that you can't send IM unless you are registered for it .

Nab, hope you don't mind me asking but what are the signs and symptoms of hypotonia? Can it be localised to one area of the body or is the the entire body. Hope your dd is doing well now.

mamimwnci · 28/06/2007 20:25

Hi, just wanted to agree with the 'every baby is different' sentiments. I have 4 children, my first DD was crawling at 6m and walking at 10m, No.4 DD is now nearly 9 mths and is only just showing signs of crawling. He also sat up and rolled really late compared to my others. I was a little worried at first but then thought, no it was the others that did everything early not this one being particularly lazy. But he is a vv happy baby so am just letting him go with the flow. If I were you I wouldn't be seriously worried until he was at least a year.

Clary · 29/06/2007 00:24

So a 1yo not sitting is OK ?

I think the crawling etc is a red herring, we all know babies who didn't crawl for ages (DS1 was 11mo) and I don't recall any of mine rolling really in a big way.

But a 9mo should be sitting, or at least making significant progress in that direction.

NAB3 · 29/06/2007 12:26

Izabella: I think it is in the limbs. IIRC if my daughter had had it more severely she would have had CP.

NotReallyFlashGordon · 29/06/2007 12:27

dd is 17months and has only recently started rolling and crawling. i really wouldn't worry about it.

NAB3 · 29/06/2007 12:32

I feel quite strongly that you need to go to the GP. EVERYONE told me my DD was fine but I just knew she wasn't. We wasted months when we could have been having treatment and if you are worried you need to get someone who is trained to look at your child.

Clary · 29/06/2007 12:36

Thank you NAB3. It really isn't helpful when people say "it's fine" when it may not be!

NAB3 · 29/06/2007 12:41

Exactly. I wasted so many months as I desperately wanted to believe the GP that she was fine. The only consolation is that she is fine now but we didn't know that would be the case.

MrsRecycle · 29/06/2007 12:44

Going back to your OP - he has a high-chair and baby walker - I believe that these should not be used until the baby can sit-up unaided. Not criticising just mentioning what I thought was current recommendations.

My ds1 is 10 months and loves laying on the floor and will shuffle on his back across the room and will push himself off surfaces with his feet (still on his back). But he has started sitting up unaided (only recently).

Hulababy · 29/06/2007 12:49

I agree with those saying that it may be worth seeing the GP for a referral.

I don't think the rolling, cruising or crawling are a probelm at this age. But the not sitting up at all would be a concern for me, and one which I would want checking out. Just in case.

Izabella · 29/06/2007 19:39

We are going to see a pediatrician tomorrow. Another sleepless & worry filled night ahead.

The only thing that encourages me is the DD is hitting all the other milestones including fine motor. She can sit for up to 15 secs unaided but then just falls backwards or to the side. I so hope this is because of her small weight (0.4 on the charts) and the fact that she is a long baby. To be honest I don't really pratice sitting with her at home and she is only really on the floor for 30 mins a day as feeding takes so long & my main aim was to get her back on the charts again.

CoteDAzur · 29/06/2007 20:49

I hope it goes well for you Izabella. Good luck.

Peachy · 29/06/2007 20:51

Good luck Izabella.

And its worth knowing its unlikely you'll get answers tomorrow- ime (which is sadly 2 of my 3 boys) they just order lots of reports and take histories at the first appointment- first time we ahd that I was shattered not to get any answers.

akaJamiesMum · 29/06/2007 20:57

I am a very part time (as in only there when needed) HV. I personally think your HV is being a bit alarmist. Did she even look your DS over and check his muscle tone, see if he could weight bear and check all other milestones were being reached.
As other people have said all babies develop differently and your DS may just be very placid. Some babies IME are perfectly happy to be babies and watch the world around them while other babies are not happy until they are up and moving.

CarGirl · 29/06/2007 20:58

dd3 couldn't sit reliably until 10 months (possibly nearer 11) I think it was because she screamed most of the first 6 months so didn't get laying down or tummy time etc etc - just held upright to reduce screaming! She didn't roll/crawl until well after that. It does take practice for them to strengthen muscles and get the balance thing sorted.

You could try a galt activity dino/or proper supportive v cushion and start giving her several short bursts at sitting each day. Hope your gp is helpful.

Sakura · 30/06/2007 07:00

My DD is 9 months and is not crawling yet. They say girls are supposed to be slightly quicker than boys in general, so Ive got myself all worried. But I think mums know in general if something is wrong` with their baby. I mean, we can see our babies develop week by week and we can see them doing it at a slow but steady pace that suits them.
Also, 9 months is very borderline. If it was 11 months I would get the baby checked out, but not at 9 months.

Izabella · 30/06/2007 20:09

What a day...!!!

Whilst I loaded our things into the car to get ready for our appointment dh sat completely unaided with my mum for 10 whole minutes. She wasn?t even wobbly and she was able to turn around without loosing her balance. This is just amazing as she couldn't even sit in the tripod hold a few days ago. When I came in & mum told me I had tears in my eyes. By this time it was too late to cancel the appointment with the paediatrician so we went anyway. He examined dh closely & he said her muscle tone was absolutely fine. Its more than likely that she just didn?t want to sit until now (or just wasn?t ready)

I cannot tell you how relieved I am. Looking forward to a good nights sleep. Thanks so much for all your support & good wishes. Piglet, please let us know how you & ds get on.

cruisemum1 · 30/06/2007 21:29

dh????! surely you mean dd???

Izabella · 30/06/2007 21:32

Sorry, sleep deprivation talking!!! Meant DD.

cruisemum1 · 30/06/2007 21:38

thought so!!! The image of your mother supporting your dh while he sat upright for 10 mins whle you looked on bleary eyed with pride was rather a confusing notion!

hana · 30/06/2007 21:53

that's great!
she'll be dreaming about crawling next and rolling over.....

wrinklytum · 30/06/2007 21:58

Good news

Typical baby,eh Doing it just before the paed appointment!!!

Before you know it she will be crawling/rolling/shuffling with a vengeance,I am sure.
