Hi
Can anybody recommend a clinic/therapist in the London/Surrey area that runs social skills and development classes aimed at 5-7 year olds? Has anybody had any success with these types of sessions? Thanks .

Social skills and development classes? First time I hear of them, or do you mean Occupational Therapy? are you concerned about his development?

I've heard of something called 'Onwardsun', I googled and it looked pretty good.

It’s classes that help kids who are socially immature or don’t ‘get’ intuitive element of social relationships / friendships eg around personal space and so on.
Thanks Jessstan that course does look helpful but Inthink it’s in Canada

Try asking your GP and your DC's school for pointers, the SENCO may be able to help. Social skills groups are often run by specialist speech and language therapists - even for children with very good speech the intuitive and non-verbal elements like body space are part of "language". Does your DC have a diagnosis?

We had enormous success with a weekly group run by a SALT and an OT which was provided by a combination of the NHS/LA, but it was not in London and it was only offered to children with ASC diagnoses in mainstream education. I have also occasionally seen adverts for private groups which might well be more flexible in who they will take.

Not exactly what you asked for but this app is really good for social skills. My son has autism so I use it

Thanks this is helpful.
Kleinzeit, this all looks really useful. We don’t have a diagnosis but have met with school senco because of various behaviour issues and she has noted there are some problems with social intuition with other children of the same sex but seems to be better interaction with opposite sex. The school have made some suggestions about steps they can take to help with this but obviously I’m keen to do as much as possible to help my child. I think structured clubs like guides/cubs are helpful but I also really want to find something that explicitly focuses on helping develop social understanding and nuance. It’s proving quite difficult!

Thanks for your replies and for the link Elf.

Socially Speaking or Talkabout for children are great resources I’ve used at school

goldengummybear · 31/12/2018 21:07

My children's schools ran nurture groups to help with social skills.

Thanks very much for all these suggestions. It's much appreciated.
