FWIW meggle, I def remember a quote in P Leach along the lines of "babies who are awake a lot during the day are classically intelligent" (I'm sure she used the word classically, it always made me think of babies studying Latin )

Not read whole thread, but you could be describing DD.

She would sleep for 45mins a day from day one. She is still a whirlwind, and I am still exhausted, but when she does sleep at night, she sleeps - bombs wouldn't wake her!

ib · 24/06/2007 12:46

My ds never slept at all during the day until he was put on meds for his reflux. Now, two months on, he has 2 or 3 naps a day, max 1 hour. He's 6mo by now, so that's reasonably normal.

ShowOfHands · 24/06/2007 13:05

Meggle and lemonaid, you could be describing my 6wk old dd. She is awake all day, feeds as often as she possibly can and then goes down at 9ish, waking for feeds at 11/12pm, 3am, 5/6am ish. She nods off a lot during the day but wakes within minutes. Draining but nights are at least tolerable.

CarGirl · 24/06/2007 13:11

My dd had silent reflux and from 6.5weeks didn't sleep at all during the day and pretty much screamed unless being held in a certain position - she used to crash out 10pm-6am and only wake in between occasionally. If you try infant gaviscon and things radically improve that will pretty much rule that theory in or out, it will only take a couuple of days to make a difference.

DD only possetted a tiny bit but it used to come up curdled straight after a feed and had loads of trapped tummy wind that she would burp up. HTH

Haven't read thread yet, but this sounds like my dd. Until the age of 10/11/12 months she didn't really sleep during the day. She used to have 15 minutes each morning and afternoon (if I could persuade her). Now she has started walking she sleeps beautifully for an hour each morning and afternoon, but not if she is at nursery.
Yesterday she was awake and bouncing around the place from 8am til midnight apart from a 45 minute sleep before lunch and 30 minutes at about 6pm.

Look on the positive side - its absolute hell most of the time, but meant we had no problems taking her to Hyde Park Calling yesterday!

Guitargirl · 24/06/2007 15:27

My DD nearly 6 months hardly sleeps during the day and never really has except for the first week or so when she was jaundiced.

It often amazes me how she can be SO awake after hours and hours and I am flagging and desperate for a bit of shut-eye! Am hoping that when she starts crawling and moving around more she might tire herself out.

ib · 24/06/2007 17:11

Hmm, cargirl, gaviscon did nothing for ds' reflux, we had to use much heavier duty meds

Another one who had a non-sleeping baby!

dd didn't have any regular naps during the day until she was 5 months old. She would vary from 20 mins every so often to an hour or so, with no set pattern. She then slept 2/3 hours (or longer) every afternoon until she was 20 months.

MatNanPlus · 24/06/2007 17:57

I met a 13m little girl today who sleeps 2030-0630 and 2 x 30 minute naps each day, she has been like that since she was small.

duchesse · 24/06/2007 18:07

I had two like that. Luckily my health visitor was not the self-absorbed cow yours seems to be, and just said that every baby is different. It's certainly more tiring than having a baby that sleeps, but they're a lot of fun as well.

ShowOfHands · 24/06/2007 18:25

Oh Meggle, come back and see us properly on postnatal. Everybody's having their own problems, believe me! Honestly, I know how you feel. It amazes me that there are babies who go 4hrs between feeds from birth seemingly and then nap like stars when M just feeds all day, never naps and just doesn't seem to conform to any norms. I'm assuming though that she hasn't read any of the books and doesn't know that she's unique. I'm consoling myself with the knowledge that she's not going to be dressing in the latest ridiculous fashion or listening to crap boy bands aged 13. Nope, she'll be the odd one out like her Mum. Dammit, maybe I should force a routine after all...

And weight gain? She's a tank! It is nice to see you on here and I sympathise with the non-sleeping baby.

Oh dear, she's squeaking...

gegs73 · 24/06/2007 20:09

DS1 never used to sleep in the day until I discovered the dummy and muslin combo when he was around 4.5 months old. He used to winge alot as well as he was tired.

youpeskykids · 24/06/2007 20:13

Hooray....so I'm not the ONLY one!!!!!
