Please help
2 weeks ago my DS screamed with absoulte panic as i put him in the bath, thought it might be to hot but no it wasn`t this went on for a few nights, then a couple of spots appeared and now has chicken pox .
so i put the bad bath times down to sore skin and have let him be for 10 days just giving him strip washes, but have tryed to bath him the last few nights and is still clawing at me to get him out, so we have tryed the soft approach of me in the bath and getting him to come close and do splashing but not much luck yet.
If anyone has any ideas i would be grateful.

Most kids go throuh a fear of baths stage; ds1 has had 3 of them so far(phases, not baths!), luckily I have yet to see it with ds2, but I'm sure its coming. Reckon the pox is a coincidence.
Call me harsh, but if you stop baths and just wash down etc, you're not solving anything, so we just kept on and on, and one day he was instantly ok with water again

thanks mustrunmore i just hate seeing him in such a state its like im trying to drown him or something or perhaps he now knows that its bedtime!

So why not give him a shock with a morning bath and see what his reaction is?! He might be so suprised he forgets to get worked up, or so confused because he's only just got up!

Only you can judge it really. But ds1 was really really upset for a while, purple and crying. We just did quick in, wash, out. The aversion to hairwashing is a whole different ballgame And luckily for me, I'm not in the slightest bit maternal, so it didntupset me, I just saw it as a task to be accomplished/problem to solve!

Have you tried giving a really interesting bath toy outside the bath, then lifting him in with it, once he's already absorbed with it?
Or how about bathing with a friend? (him, not you!) I'm sure its not too young for peer pressure! Ds2 loves splashing with his big brother, and I was wondering if thats why he hasnt hit the phobia yet?

do you have a shower spray just to hose him down with!

once my dd had a thrush infection that caused bath problems - a day or so after her cream - no problem.

wishingfourgotone · 20/06/2007 22:09

My dd did this at 8months it lasted 3months i got her used to the bath again by letting her watch me in bath laughing and kicking splashing making it luck fun/exciting, then gradually i started sitting her on edge bath with feet in then slowly over a cpl of weeks lowereing into bath till she was totally in bath with me the next time she was stood up in the bath stamping and splashing laughing it took time but perservere it took ages to get her to that point i tried everything putting dolly in leaving bathing etc toys in bath deep shallow, floaty thing for swimming everything dont loose hope good luck

wishingfourgotone · 20/06/2007 22:11

my dd even went in bath with my sis dd who 2months younger than dd an this just upset her tried paddling pool the lot

SpacePuppy · 20/06/2007 22:19

Ds had this for about a week, but taking my personality into consideration (I don't freak out much) I did a very calm gentle soft toned almost whispering approach, talked to him in his ear all the time while getting him undressed, once he was in the bath (only about 3cm of water) I held my arm around his body, still talking to him gently, not allowing him to upset me (be strong) then just told him, I'm only pouring water on your bum, then his back etc. (I used a cup). It took 5 days, but everyday he trusted it more, and everyday I suggested a move forward, ie do you want to try to sit down. I just kept calm and allowed him to get out when he wanted to. Must add the fear all happened, because he slipped in the bath and had his face in the water.

LONG story, hth.

stressteddy · 20/06/2007 22:22

I've never had this. Oh, you poor thing. I'm so sorry for you both. I never knew this could happen or even be a common thing
The only thing I can suggest is that I bathe mine in the morning
Always have - it just seemed more logical to me than bathing at night
Hope it all works out for you

I have tried different toys the paddling pool and even the kitchen sink for just splashing his feet in.
The only other thing i can think of is i took him swimming about 3/4 weeks ago and he went under, but he had a bath since then, who knows! and as for hair washing not even going to attempt that one for a while.might try again tonight if no joy think imight try the morning bath instead.
