this is a silly question!!! from what postion do babies go to crawl? is it from sitting or lying on the floor? my dd sits brilliantly very stable she is 7 mth she can roll but hates being on the floor when she on her front she will push her head right up but doesnt go on her knees or rock etc and i am not sure how they go to crawl (1st baby so i am bit dumb lol)

no idea lilsmum mine is 5months and is quite stable in sitting and sort of does a shuffle crawl once she has rolled over onto her stomach from lying. It is mostly backwards which totally frustrates her.
At a guess all kids are different so will just do what they need to do. Remember some kids don't crawl at all and go straight to walking.

lilsmum - mine hated being on her front and eventually would push her head up, then she started doing weird 'swimming' motions to get from side to side and that just led to crawling all by itself.

lilsmum

that pushing up of the head is the first stage in getting ready to crawl in the 'typical' baby manner - I mean if you were to imitate a baby crawling on all fours - so she is certainly thinking about it. She may well start the rocking business when she is certain she has cracked the head lift thing.

Then the fun begins for you, tee hee, thik about all the things in your house you will have to move and you will never go to the loo un-followed again!

lilsmum, my ds2 didn't crawl at all until he was 14 mths so enjoy the non moving stage while you can. Babies get to crawling their own way. Enjoy

lilsmum i have to say now that im going to be no help at all because my ds crawled after rolling over on to his front then sat up were as my mil thought this very strange because all hers sat up then rolled them selfs to the side to start crawling but have to agree with the others on enjoy the time there not cralwing because once they start you will never child saftey the house enough like others said children grow so diferently so enjoy the times where you can put them in one place blink and there still in that place (god those were the days)a bit of advice would be if you think there might be a chance she is going to crawl soon go out and by as many socket covers as possible and at least two saftey gates we got the travel saftey gate out of argos it was twenty pounds but the best buy ever because you can take it with you when ever you go visiting somewhere so you dont need to buy more for each house hth

Either.

poppyseed · 28/08/2004 19:09

I would say either. Both of ours have done it the same time as sitting confidently on their own and it's fun to watch them go from lying to sitting as their bums go at peculiar angles. Babies do their own thing though and yours may not even crawl - I know a lot that bum shuffle and seem quite contented with life!! Enjoy this time and capture it on film... you know where she is at the moment!!
