DD is 7 and constantly saying she feels sick

Dd has a big phobia of being sick. If she does get a bug which is rare, she gets very scared and upset and shakes with fear Sad Could this be why she constantly says she feels sick?
Come to think of it, the past two times she’s been sick was when she was extremely tired and the second time it was a bug.
Now most days she’ll say she feels sick and looks anxious. Her appetite has gone down a lot. She just wants to live on rice cakes. She hardly touched her once favourite dinner today. She’s always enjoyed orange juice but today she said every time she has that it makes her feel sick so she’s gone off that now aswell. Maybe it’s anxiety?

Is it throughout the day? And is she getting enough sleep as I feel nauseous if I've had too little sleep (even by 30 mins) or if I'm very tired at night. If it's been ongoing for a while I would take her to the doctor to rule out anything physically nasty and also to stop the school from sending her home if she proclaims she feels sick there.

I think I will talk with the doctor about it. It is throughout the day too, yes. It used to be in the mornings on our way to school. Now it’s just whenever!

I’d see the gp and get checked for coeliac too

Joexxx · 28/10/2018 22:08

Gp just in case. Aside from checking it’s nothing serious try to pay no attention to it and keep offering meals, but don’t make a fuss if she eats it or not x

Does she have any other symptoms? My dd is getting a lot of tummy aches atm. Some of it is psychosomatic - eg stomach ache before flying as stomach pain triggered a medical condition a few years ago when on the plane. Some of it is purely physical, ie stomach migraines (which also make you feel sick btw).

Your dd is at an age, where this could be worries or physical or a combi.

HI there,
I just wanted to say my daughter was completely the same prob from roughly the same age, on and off. It got particularly bad at the beginning of this year, and along with taking her to GP ( just to be sure....I was convinced it was anxiety related) and being reassured all was ok after a few basic tests, we got her a book about anxiety and it was brilliant - 'what to do when you worry too much' - it's the first hit on amazon if you type in anxiety children.

Really helped her understand the connection between her brain and tummy, and also helped her realise the more she worries, the more she'd feel sick, so it helped her take a step back and be more rational. Can't recommend it enough.

There's a couple of threads I was on about it .... I'm not on here much so don't know how to link, but if you do an advanced search and put in my username in that bit, they all come up as I don't post much at all!
Hope it settles soon - hard not to get overly worried about it yourself.

DS2 had this problem in Y1 and it turned out he was simply not drinking enough during the school day; the symptom of dehydration was nausea. It took a couple of visits to GP for the right questions to be asked. His teacher was brilliant and did a water bottle challenge with him, and the problem disappeared.

Hope you get an answer soon.

I was going to post similar to what bobbymcf said. My eldest dd developed a phobia of being sick especially in front of her peers and was becoming anxious about it, she was about 8-9 at the time. It was then a vicious circle I believe because she was confusing the symptoms of anxiety with believing that she was about to be sick. Again it was going through the symptoms of anxiety with her...churning stomach, tightness in throat etc. It didn't help that dd contracted the norovirus and passed out through sickness but all in all and 4 years later, she rarely mentions it. Yes, a good idea to get checked out with the GP if her actual appetite has been affected...again that might be anxiety related if nothing physical but probably best to rule out the physical thing first. If she has an understanding teacher and she has a fear of being sick in class (as some children actually are sick in front of others), it might be good to sound it out with the teacher also (my dd's teacher was very helpful).

Yes, I believe that my dd was not drinking enough also and probably adding to her symptoms.
