Another weaning thread...

Sorry! I know there have been loads of weaning threads recently- I'm just so confused 😐

I already have a 7yo DS1 but he was a breeze even though we started way earlier than we were meant to at 4 months and he just guzzled anything down that you fed him or put in front of him.

This time with DS2 I waited until 6 months and started this week, and he's a whole different child (obviously!)

I've read that the baby should be sitting up well unsupported (he isn't) not thrusting out food with his tongue (he does this) and he does not appear willing to chew at all.

Should I pause weaning for now or power through? I have only started this week so I'm very aware it's early days yet. He's 26 weeks today, six calendar months tomorrow.

It's ok if he can't sit unsupported as long as he is stable in a high chair, as far as my HV told me.

I would probably give it another week or two. In the meantime there will be no harm in putting food in front of him to explore, which is all part of it. They have to learn to chew so he will start to soon enough.

Are you offering puree or doing BLW?

He has 3 teeth already if it matters. Thanks for any advice!

I'm doing a little bit of both so purée veg from a spoon and giving him little bit of soft boiled for him to try and feed himself - he can hold it and will suck but not chew. He's sitting fine strapped in to his high chair.

Chewing and swallowing have to be learned, but if you feel his tongue thrust is still there, there is absolutely no harm in waiting another week or two.

The fact he's picking up food and bringing it to his mouth is a great start. It's quite possible he won't chew or swallow for a few weeks yet which is completely normal.

Great thanks! I think I'll try again in a week and see how he gets on.
