Hi, i realised my son ( first born ) was nonverbal at 22 months old. i just took him to my home land and realised how different he is from his peers in behaviour and speech. i had concerns at 18 months and everyone told me “don’t worry boys are late talkers”. i wish i took it seriously then.
i must confess that i didnt even realis that he is so much delayed in language & speech although had his other milestones at time.
Have been working on his language and speech and he has his private speech therapy sessions once a week since last month.
His receptive is improving every day along with expressive. although he is taking baby steps in expressive. he knows “go” but would say aaaaooo on &off as aaaaa, ooooo and “yeah” as aaaayyyy. he can immitate a few rhymes. has started pointing on books but no pointing in the surrounding or wont follow my point. Moreover autism is at the back of my mind and i watch him like a hawk.
Not sure if its only speech and language delay or could lead to autism. Otherwise he is a calm and placid boy, loves eating anything or everything and a good sleeper. Two OT’s assessed him and said he has no sensory issues. got him assessed by developmental paediatrician and he said a few traits of autism but gave him statement of speech and language delay. Any mums out there who have been through the same phase could share their experiences.
Thanks xx

My son was language delayed. He was our first and the pediatrician noticed it at this 18 month visit. If he's having speech therapy sessions that's about all you can do at this point, other than to follow the therapist's recommendations on reading to him, etc.

Focus on the language issue for now. If he was really autistic the developmental pediatrician would have diagnosed that.

By the way, even with the speech therapy it set my son back for the first few years of primary school, particularly with his reading. He got him extra reading support at school and a reading tutor at home, and those both helped a lot.

Sorry you're going through this. Flowers

He had some language by 24 months but it wasn't up to developmental norms. Has your speech therapist done an assessment on where your son is?
