What does your 15 month old do?

Hi all,

What kind of things does your 15 month old do? I think I’m driving myself crazy by reading too much into this. I found the asq3 18 month old questionnaire online (our area doesn’t do this check but does the one at 2 years) and there are loads of things that he needs to do by 18 months. I know he’s only 15 months but I’m still getting really worried

He has a few words (brush, bye bye, water, hello, good night, ouch and maybe some others). He can count from 1-10 and sings songs well. He can’t sort shapes yet and doesn’t know his animal sounds. He wouldn’t point to things in a book on command but does point to things that he wants. He did see a dog in the park the other day and said woof so I don’t know if he’s picking things up but just not using them.

He can follow simple commands like ‘don’t go there’, ‘put your toys away’ and ‘dangerous’.

He doesn’t cuddle but is veryyyy active. So I don’t know if all this is normal or if I should be worried.

He also loves his toy cars and anything with wheels!

Hi. I work in a health visitor team and, although obviously I can't say anything for certain without seeing him/his ASQ, it sounds like you have a perfectly normal 15 month old! Try not to look too far ahead as he's likely to change so much in the next few months. And remember that they're not 'supposed' to tick every box in the ASQ.

But to answer your question, my 15.5m says about 10 words but doesn't count (never thought to try to teach him tbh!). He joins in the actions to a couple of songs and likes dancing but doesn't sing. He doesn't point to things in books on command, though likes pulling up the flaps. He knows a couple of animal sounds, though most of them say quack ATM. He follows simple commands and is very cuddly and fairly active. Nowhere near shape sorting or getting the pieces in those big puzzles (and my oldest wasn't doing that until much older than this). So sounds very similar to yours! I glanced through both the 14 m and 18 m ASQs a few weeks ago with mine in mind and whilst he did most things on the 14 month one there was lots he still didn't do on the 18 month. And I think he's pretty bright for his age!

I know it's easy to say don't worry, but please just try to enjoy him!

Thank you so much! I guess what I was really looking for was for someone to say he’s doing okay!

He loves books and likes flip them and also says quack as well. A lot of things he probably doesn’t do because I don’t sit with him to practice. I’m always running around doing chores or things for him but don’t give him a lot of quality time if that makes sense!

My son just turned 15 months he can say around 23 words. But these do consist of animal noises too. He can put a thread through a bobbin the ones you find on babipur website and can put the rings over the stick, he used to have a plastic one from Tesco only with 5 rings but it was a large cone so was too easy by 13 months. He can build three blocks and can put duplo together. He tries to brush my and his hair. He tries to moisturiser himself. Fills and empties jugs of water. He does a chest thump when he sees a gorilla in a book and puts his hand forward like a trunk when he sees an elephant. He waves, points, puts hands on head and says oh no after he purposely throws things lol and waves hello and goodbye and knocks on doors. He can put shapes into the hole but will not look for the right hole I have to point to it. He can dribble a ball. Throw a ball over head he can run and climb and blow bubbles in water and will kick in the water if u tell him too. He listens to simple instructions like get your shoes. He pretends to be in a race which is funny and runs back and forth. He moves cars around and says broom broom and knows movement to some songs . He'll point at familiar people in pictures like his cousins. He will not count despite me reading number books and flash cards. He's also very active and won't sit down. Health visitor told me that he was slightly ahead but normal and that at 15 months they should say 3 -6 words. But to count to 10 is amazing they do say that if they pick up on something it shows that that what they're interested in so you should support that certain thing I would encourage the counting and show some flash cards so he can also recognise the numbers and do fun number games with him. And honestly the development at 18 months is so ahead of a 15 month old, and a 2 year old can often talk in small sentences. My nephew just turned tw and this is the way he talks "look at this.... can I have an..." ect it's not perfect speech and it's almost always a 3 word sentence. And they expect by the age of two to put two words together so probably when ur looking at 18 months u usually get what a baby should do 18 months to 2 years. But even if your baby said 50 words which some babies do at 15 months it doesn't mean much I worked in a school and honestly kids would go from nursery and reception in the highest set and then in year one go down to the Lowest set and it would happen vice versa too. Kids develop at different ages. It is an indication that he might be good at numbers ect by not deffinete. But babies brain do developed most between 0 and 3 and there trust is gained most at 1-3 It's there 'brainwashing' period how they see how to act and talk.
