ds is nearly 4 and isn't showing ANY hand preferance. How does this all work then?

he will literally draw with either hand, pick up a fork with either hand etc.

He also shows no foot preferance in football.

We have in the family

me, right handed
dp, left handed

grandparenst-2 left handed, 1 ambidextrous (properly, she used to be regularly paid to appear in psychology exp as an u/grad) and one right handed.

one left and one right handed uncle

dd seems to be consistantly right handed

How is this one going to work then? Should I be in any way concerned?

Hi, my daughter was very much like this but over time (and encourgement) has become right-handed. If he goes to nursery tell them which hand you'd prefer him to write with. I don't think it's a problem at all more another string to his bow. I'm right-handed but still open jars and bottles with my left.

He could just be ambidextrous, my brother is and can write with both hands, I wouldn't worry yet, he may start showing a preference at some point, is he at nursery/pre school?

fillyjonk · 14/06/2007 20:33

hes at kindergarten,

no writing as yet (fine by me) but lots of painting. NO consistency.

Am pretty sure this is rather unusual among his friends...

Ds was ambidextrous until he was about 5, he's now right handed, dd has always shown a marked preference for her left, so much that they commented on it at nursery and said they suspected she was l handed but they don't say definitely until they're 5. The pre school has just classified her as left handed. It's not that common but, I got the impression that it's not unheard of. Have you asked the kindergarten what they think, I can't really offer any advice, only my experience and I'd hope they would be able to answer your questions.

Kicks a football with both feet!!!!! [grins] He is destined for greatness, get Sir Alex on the phone, and order yourself a flash car....that boy will be worth millions I tell you, millions!
Seriously though....I was much the same when I was little and am now a full cack handed lefty, so don't worry (and obviously, as everyone knows - lefties and ambies are far superior to the rest of the population )

Trinityrhino · 14/06/2007 21:04

dd1 never showed any preference until at school she began to wr4ite with her left hand. she still does alot of everything else with either hand

fillyjonk · 14/06/2007 21:46

lol. he does have football lessons and does seem to have a talent for it so...cross fingers....

I am not bothered as such. i can see how there is a chance he is ambidextrous, given that my mum is. actually even me and my brother who are right handed can actually write perfectly legibly with our left hands.

i suppose its partly that dp and me have always been curious, in a friendly rivalry as to which he'd be-dp being left handed and me right handed. And lo, he refuses to decide
