My name is DD & I'm a bottom shuffler...

Why?? Why do they do it?

It would be so easy for her to crawl - she has all the right muscles - she is nearly walking fgs - but she won't even try to crawl. She makes her way speedily around the room despite the ludicrous aforementioned bottom shuffling.

She won't even countenance being on 2 knees at once let alone crawling - she won't roll over either.

I can see she is totally frustrated at times because it means she get to a sitting position by herself etc. She has been sitting unaided for at least 4 months btw (is now 9 mths)

Anyone any experience/ words of wisdom??

She will probably go from bottom shuffling to walking and leave the crawling phase out. It's not uncommon.

WigWamBam · 14/06/2007 18:05

There's nothing wrong with bottom-shuffling. As long as she can get around, does it really matter how she does it?

Relax ... it's really not a problem.

My lo bottom shuffled from 9 months i wasn't surprised because i did it too !! Everyone told me she'll be a late walker. She shuffled with increasing speed until 12 months and now at 14 months is walking everywhere with the occasional shuffle. I wouldn't worry about it - just enjoy that dd is a bit different !!

ilovecake · 14/06/2007 18:06

My bottom shuffler started at 10 months - didnt sit till eight months! seems to speed around on his bum and not interested in crawling or being on tummy! dirty holey trousers but keeps him happy. hes my second so im in no hurry for him to walk.

belgo · 14/06/2007 18:07

My dd stareted bottom shuffling at 9 months, and learnt to walk at 13 months. When she started walking, she started crawling occasionally as well. Developmentally she is fine, so try not to worry.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 14/06/2007 18:10

Ah but you can't carry stuff and crawl. And you can't eat and crawl.

My dd bottom shuffled, was perfectly happy and finally got up and walked at 20 months.

I love bottom shufflers

mumzarello · 14/06/2007 18:11

Thanks for the speedy comments - I feel very reassured

It's not the bottom shuffling perse - just that she is getting very frustrated not being able to sit up or roll over by herself - plus piercing ails every time she ends up on her tummy

No advice. My two are the opposite. Comando crawl/roll as soon as possible and complete uninterest in sitting. I was thinking that DD might be different to DS being a girl, but no. Bottom shuffling sounds fun.

francagoestohollywood · 14/06/2007 18:19

Mine were both bottom - shuffler. dd in particular was extremely quick

CoteDAzur · 14/06/2007 18:36

DD was/is a bottom shuffler. Walked at 16 months, never crawled. Now at 21 months, she still can't get up on her own. Seriously.

jackie2kids · 14/06/2007 20:01

Also have a bottom shuffler here. I think we have the record.

DD is 2yrs and 2mnths AND NOT YET WALKING.

She just doesn't care. She can keep up with her 3yr old bro and all the kids at nursery (amazingly rarely gets trodden on).

She can push a dolls buggy on her bum (people keep buying her presents to encourage her to walk!)

She gets through umpteen pairs of trousers a day as she bum shffles round the garden / park.

She never wears dresses as the end up wrapped round her waist in an unlady like fashion.

But she's happy.

Paeds tell me she will walk eventually!!!

rantinghousewife · 14/06/2007 20:03

Ha, bless, yes dd was a shuffler, she walked at 14 months and didn't crawl. Got to be honest and say I didn't know there was such a thing till dd but, apparently 1 in every 16 babes born is a bottom shuffler.

hockeypuck · 14/06/2007 20:15

Jackie2kids - Is everything else with your daughter ok? She certainly sounds bright and keen to move around etc.

I only ask, because my dd bottom shuffled until she walked at 11 months, was cruising at 8 months.

Mr DS however, is nearly 14 months and wont even cruise round furniture. He is able to weight bear but chooses not to at all. He's just been referred to physio next month.

I guess I just want a little bot of confirmation that he's still normal!

(sorry to hijack by the way)

I love these threads and that everyone's lo's are so unique. My dd1 sat at 6.5 months, rolled everywhere for ages and then crawled at 9 months and walked at 14 months - but only inside. It took her another month to muster the courage to walk outside! DD2 is 9 months and just about sitting unaided for a max of 5 mins. She won't roll and hates being on her front - boy does she get cross if we put her on her front . I think she will bum shuffle as when she sits supported she does this mad bouncing up and down while laughing inanely. She won't keep her legs still at all and in her high chair was bouncing around so much her tea ended up everywhere! I think it won't long before she has the balance and strength to use this to move forwards. I love watching her she has me in hysterics.

It fascinates me how my two girls look so similar but act so differently.

Jackie2 kids - my cousins little boy bum shuffled everywhere and didn't walk until 2.5 yrs. He had every test under the sun but nothing wrong - he's 6 now and absolutely fine . Hockeypuck - what's normal? There seems to be such a variation with development milestones that I really would try not to worry, hard I know especially when you have two that are so different. I was getting concerned about dd2 being so late sitting, but she's suddenly got the hang of it and I've forgotten all the worry overnight. Hope all goes well with the physio, I hope he gets there at his own pace.

wrinklytum · 14/06/2007 22:13

Jackie2kids

Your post has given me much hope and reassurance.DD only started bottom shuffling at 15 months. Now 18.5 months and no sign of getting up!

No other apparent problems.

Can easily see her still shuffling around at 2!

HV says she seems normal....

Glad mine is not the only child out there ruining her tights

Older brother walked at a year.

lucyellensmum · 14/06/2007 22:50

i bum shuffled, i walked at 10m, DP bum shuffled, walked at 18m, DD bum shuffled (sooo cute) and walked at 16m. None of use crawled, i mean, it must hurt ones knees, mustnt it - see, theres a lot of sense in the bumchiccashuffle

StinkyPete · 14/06/2007 22:55

dd is still v much bum shuffling at 17 months. she has long hair and seems to prefer to keep her face up. she has an odd bash at crawling but soon sits up to push her hair out of her face teenager style - looks hilarious .
