Concerned about dd being held back....

dd is 11.5 months old and whilst she seems to be excelling with her language and fine motor skills, her gross motor skills are severely lacking!! To be completely fair in the last week she has begun to shuffle along on her bottom very slowly but still shows no interest what so ever in putting any weight on her legs at all.

Her lack of movement or standing doesn't actually concern me at all - after all she will move and stand when she wants to. However our nursery has a policy of not moving the children from the baby room up to the next class until they are confident 'crawlers' or 'cruisers'. I understand this and the dangers of moving children too quickly when they're not ready - so normally I would agree with this policy 100%. But given that she is now the oldest child in the baby room and her other skills are so advanced, I'm beginning to get concerned that by staying there too much longer she will actually be suffering in the long run. For example, they still serve fairly pureed food and still feed the babies - rather than given them much more finger food and allow them to try and feed themselves which is not only what I do at home at the weekends but also what the next class up does too.

Don't get me wrong - I do not want to push dd into doing something that she wouldn't be able to cope with but my thoughts are that she would benefit much more from being surrounded by (some) older/same age and more mobile babies rather than the average 6-9 month olds that make up the majority of the baby room.

Anyone with any thoughts?

I used to love my sons nurseries baby room. I would have let him stay there forever! Rememeber they have a higher staff ratio in that room so it wont hinder her. Also if she has started to bottom shuffle she will be mobile doing this wont she? My daughter started off as a bottom shuffler and we were told that bottom shufflers are usually late walkers because they can get around so quickly on their bums that they dont want to walk
