Bratz dolls - harmless fun or the devil's toy?

My 4 year old has just asked if she could have a Bratz doll. I think they are hideous and look like stoned hookers. What to do? They are supposedly aimed at 8 year olds. I'd love to hear from you about what your girls play with them...and what you say if you feel the same as me.

Jules, I don't have any daughters but i too think they are hideous dolls. When little girls play with them I think it encourages them to want to dress that way....after all they do say children learn from toys!!!!

dd1 is 6 and really wants one. I'm stalling her for as long as possible.

admylin · 11/06/2007 17:28

My 8 year old niece has been into Bratz for years and stil plays with them - I suppose they are more hip than Barbie, not as pink and fluffy so it might be a good ides to start your 4 year old on them. My dd had Barbie but is now a cool going on 7 year old and wants to start with Bratz. Now we have a big toy box of Barbies and bits and bobs that will never be touched again!

SueBaroo · 11/06/2007 17:42

We won't allow them, but Dd has never expressed an interest, she's much more into baby-dolls. We just have the policy which we let friends and family know about when it comes to presents and things. We won't have Barbie stuff, so Bratz is right out.

Hulababy · 11/06/2007 17:44

They are horrible looking things. Have trained DD to not like them. I have no problems with Barbies and other fashion dolls, but these are just ugly. She's 5yo and working so far...

SoupDragon · 11/06/2007 17:45

Less evil than Barbie with her f-ing pooing dog IMO.

kittylette · 11/06/2007 17:46

pmsl @ stoned hookers!!!

Lizzer · 11/06/2007 17:46

I put it off til 6 but then she was bought one.

Dd's 7 now and a bit bored of them tbh, she says ,'you don't like them do you mummy?'
I say 'no I think they're ugly and their heads are too big and their feet come off which must hurt really'.
Dd laughs.

No major problem with her image, no burgeoning eating disorders or plastic surgery bookings have arisen so far.... but I'll let you know when she gets to 18 if this happens....

I just think now they aren't too bad and are more multi cultural than Barbs and co. (that american dream) Bad, bad clothes but only as awful as a girl band on kids tv.(LOL 'stoned hookers') IMO I would put it off for as long as possible (but tell everyone that's what you're doing cos I forgot and ended up with one by default!) good luck

OK, I'm the odd one out! My 5 year old dd has a couple of them and they don't really bother me. 3 year old ds plays with them too.

admylin · 11/06/2007 17:52

They are ugly - dd hasn't been given one yet but what intrest her most is the bits that come with the doll. She said "mummy if you get me one, I want the one with the most stuff with it" - yet another phase.
At the moment she's into littlest pet shop, which I also find rubbish but she buys it with her saved money so ... that phase will end too eventually.

pointydog · 11/06/2007 17:58

Surprisingly my dds have never asked for a Bratz doll.

I would have got them one if they'd asked. The devil does sometimes have the best toys.

(By the way, soupyD, the Barbie with pooing dog is pure stroke of Genius)
