Speech in 3 year old....

DeJager · 11/06/2007 14:00

I have a 3 year old, and the nursery he goes to says he has a lisp.
He battles to say the s sound...and most of his words come out a bit odd..like "love you" comes out, "lub boo"

Is this normal?

I am not too worried, should I be?

Thanks in advance mums (and dads)

Honestly I wouldnt panic- my 6 year old has a lispa s well and school say he doesnt need a referral to Speech And Language (SALT).

If they want to make a referral though, do let them- my non-verbal son (well he can say a bit but not a lot- he's 4 and ASD) has been waitng years for an apointment so its not a bad idea to get in the system just in case.

Chances are he'll grow out of it- but you can try modelling corect use and see if that helps (eg buy a puppet and call it something like Sissy The Snake) see how things get on

Wouldn't worry about it,and am a salt myself.
Peachy, agree with what you say but impotrant to note that a lot of schools don't know about appropriate salt referral. Many of them fixate on simple speech problems whilst doing nothing to help children with more complex language and/or interaction difficulties.

MD, why doesn't that srpiise me

(DS3 has a SALT assessment on the 27th- YAY ).

moondog · 11/06/2007 14:14

V good Peachy.Hope it yields useful info for you.

moondog · 11/06/2007 14:15

(Is he the ds with asd?)

DeJager · 11/06/2007 14:15

ok, thanks for the advice...will do some research into this SALT, he starts school next year, he's 3 in September this year, but will wait a year before he goes to "big" school.
I mean he's pretty smart (I like to think )but all mums want the best for their kids, so I had to ask.

Thanks for the reassurance

ASD?
that is...a disorder yes?

OP posts:
Peachy · 11/06/2007 14:22

ASD is autism (Austistic Sp[ectrum Disorder)

DS1 is the one with the ASD (HFA) dx, ds3 has learning delays, developmental delays, severe language delay and Paed has told us he ahs ASD but she can't dx it officially until after SALT assessment, iyswim. DS1 saw SALT ages ago, but that was not the SN SALT, that doesn't exist atm due to vacancy, so ds3 seeings ervice manager (apparently)- there's some confusion over whether he should be in MS< language unit, ASD unit etc in September (actually he'll be home ed until Easter but there you go- none of this 'we'll try him in different school and see what fits' for my lad!)

moondog · 11/06/2007 14:23

Oh dear Peachy.
You have your hands full there!

DeJager · 11/06/2007 14:27

you will find something that suits your little man

Hope the SALT assessment on the 27th goes the way you want it too.
Keep us posted.

Actually DS3 is the happiest child I ever met, we were saying the other day that a 'cure' probably wouldnt be a blessing for him- he couldnt be happier! And we have ds2 as well to keep us in the land of relaity (the most NT kid you ever met).

Its not hard. Different yes, but not ahrd, once you get to the acceptance bit.

moondog · 11/06/2007 14:35
