Ds has gone off loads of foods

He used to eat pretty much anything and everything, but now he is so fussy.

Used to eat rice and pasta dishes, but now has about 3 mouthfuls and won't eat anymore. Used to eat pizza but now won't even touch it.

Even roast dinners, which used to be his fave, are becoming a battle, because he just won't eat it.

Today he asked for porridge for breakfast, he ate 2 mouthfuls and that was it.

He had a cheese sandwich for lunch which he did eat all of, and then for tea I did pizza and salad as it had to be used, and he hasn't touched the pizza, just eaten the cucumber.

I won't cook different meals for different people, we all eat the same, and I also won't stop making something that everyone else eats just because he now doesn't like it, but that means that half of his meals end up in the bin. I could understand if he had never eaten them before, but it's all stuff he used to wolf down.

KIDS! My DS did this too. I just kept making meals and if he didn't eat it, he went hungry. Soon stopped altough there are meals he won't touch (hard luck little man!)

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 17:27

So shall I just carry on giving him the same then ? Must remember to ask at nursery wether he is eating, but i think they'd have said if he wasn't.

He is quite lazy which is half of the problem tbh, because we had roast dinner the other night, and i ended up feeding him some of it and he ate loads then, but as soon as i stopped and said 'now you do it', he said 'no i don't want anymore'.

How old is he? I'd just continue if I were you and hope he comes around.

MamaG · 10/06/2007 17:31

I see- nearly 4!

yes, carry on

francagoestohollywood · 10/06/2007 17:33

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 17:36

Do you think he's being picky or that his appetite has changed? Because I notice that ds (nearly 5, quite a good eater) has periods where he certainly eat less (he also sometimes write off food that he used to like, for instance he stopped eating tomatoes for a few months, now stared again...)

francagoestohollywood · 10/06/2007 17:39

started

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 17:41

Not sure th, he just seems to now moan at whatever is put in front of him, and will pick around all the foods he now doesn't like, just eating the bits he does.

Have tried reducing his portion size but that doesn't seem to be helping.

Oh gosh it's so difficult with food isn't it? I guess I'll keep offering the same food...

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 17:45

Oh and when i tell him that he can't have any afters if he doesn't make a decent dent in his meal, he doesn't seem bothered, making it seem like he genuinely isn't hungry then.

francagoestohollywood · 10/06/2007 17:45

do try and find out what he eats at nursery

francagoestohollywood · 10/06/2007 17:48

Maybe it's just a stage when he's appetite is smaller. Has he been unwell?

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 17:49

Nope no illnesses recently.

Will definatly check with nursery on Tuesday.

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 17:52

Thanks, knowing kids, by next week he will be eating everything in sight.

My ds (4.4mo) does exactly what you describe. I have found that he tends to eat much more at breakfast/lunch than at dinner - he just doesn't seem hungry later on in the day. I try not to get too stressed about it. As MamaG suggests, I just offer what the rest of us are having (although will occasionally adapt it if we're having something spicy).

Dd is started doing this over the past few months, she used to eat anything at all well except tomatoes. I wondered if she was hearing the other children in nursery at snack time saying they didn;t like things.
I don't make a fuss sometimes I will ask her to try one mouthful and if she really doesn't like it fine and I give pudding if she really will not try then fine no pudding/ice lolly whatever. When I started doing this a lot of the time she has one mouthful and actually remembers how nice it tastes and eats it.
If she really won't I just take it away.

NuttyMuffins · 11/06/2007 18:07

Well he had an ok day today. He ate ba piece of jam on toast for breakfast, and then a tuna and cheese toasty for lunch, but dinner was spag bol, which he normally loves, and he refused it.
