Should nursery be supervising toilet visits?

DS is in a 3-5 yo class and it seems like they have free access to toilets with the classroom door closed between toilets and classroom (toilets are down a short corridor and around a corner). Now that he isn’t being watched, DS definitely doesn’t bother washing his hands anymore, and it would not surprise me if the kids were playing ‘il show you mine if you show me yours’ in there, especially if they are allowed to visit toilets together (I’m not sure if this is what happens though). Seems to be a bit of a coincidence he is asking me questions about his private parts and what girls have instead of a willy recently.

Came to collect DS yesterday and the teachers had a brief moment of panic before one of them said ‘oh he’ll be in the toilet then’ and went to get him. So they can’t be keeping much of a close eye on the toilet visits then.

Now he’s a bit older so I understand I might be being a bit silly, but shouldn’t toilet visits still be supervised a little?DS doesn’t know how to wipe his bum properly really yet for a start, but also as I said he is being lazy with hand washing and never mind what the kids might get up to in there being at such a curious age.

What is standard practise for a three year old?

I’m not sure on this one sorry. At Nursery and Reception Class the toilet area could be seen clearly by the staff so it wasn’t really an issue.
