Getting rid of the dummy!

My DS has just turned 2 a matter of weeks ago. He has his dummy for naps and at night time... and for half an hour winding down time before bed. He randomly asks for his dummy throughout the day, but I just say no, and he moves on.

The last couple of days I've noticed that there are little holes in his dummies, and I found one which was hanging on by a thread! Obviously this is so dangerous, and I've now gone in to panic mode about what if he bites one off in his sleep! I don't know if this is because his last set of teeth are coming in (dentist felt them, cold, sore bum, dribbling, hands constantly in his mouth etc), or he's biting them just because.

Anyway, I'm thinking of getting rid of them, are there any tips on the best method for his age? He can talk very well, and he can understand, however, I think because these are such a constant in his life, he won't forget them very easily.

Side question.. am I bonkers to get rid of them before I begin potty training?!

If he develops a cold he will probably discard the dummy of his own free will because it's difficult to mouth breath with a dummy and his nose will be blocked up. I remember mine throwing his dummy away in disgust when his nose was blocked, it went behind the radiator and there it stayed. I'm not suggesting you try to give him a cold deliberately but he's bound to have one sooner or later.

He's got one currently @Rebecca36 but no such luck, instead he's putting it in the side of the mouth so he can have his dummy and his mouth open
