Tell me not to worry about ds2...

...he's number 3 so I'm supposed to be relaxed chilled mum. But, does this sound ok to you?

He is 13 months. He can sit very securely and can get from sitting to a crawling position. He does a funny sort of 'commando crawl' where he kicks along the floor. He can't pull up to standing yet, and doesn't like standing although he can weight bear. If I put him next to a chair or a sofa he can stand using the chair for balancing but he isn't cruising.

He rolls everywhere - if he wants to get somewhere fast, he rolls, and is very purposeful, so he is very mobile, just unconventionally.

He is still very 'little' - weighs about 19.5 lb. He can say 'Quack' for 'What does a duck say?' and 'Dada' for dh. He can also do the actions to various songs - Wind the bobbin up, If you're happy and you know it. He can eat yoghurt with a spoon, otherwise is very good with finger food. He can drink milk from a beaker himself.

Does that sound ok? should I be worried? My other two were charging round on their feet at this age, and were very much toddlers - dd was talking in sentences(!) and ds1 was climbing all over everything. It just feels like ds2 isn't doing ANYTHING iyswim!

Thanks!

he sounds very alert and good hand/eye coordination etc.

my ds2 decided that staying closer to the floor was safer until he was confident and i found that this was understandable because he had a big brother rushing about and it is safer to be nearer the floor!

He is alert - always watching what's going on. He is also a music lover - bizarre as it sounds he loves Renaissance and baroque choral music! He's upstairs in his cot listening to Josquin Missa Pange Lingua...

DS also a music lover but more into Bob the builder , gets so excited by the tune that I'm worried he'll have a stroke one day.

lol! Ds2 likes bob too! He REALLY hates Smarteenies, particularly the 'small picture big picture', and I have to take him out of the room as he shrieks an earpiercing scream, in absolute terror and shakes.

Sounds exactly like ds (my only). I think he only said duck and babbled a lot but nothing meaningful at this age.

He rolled at 4 months and commando crawled by about 8 months but couldn't sit unaided or pull himself up until he was 10/11 months old.

He started crawling in a more 'normal' way at about 10 months at about the time he could sit up. He then started walking on his knees at 11 months old which he continued to do until he was 16 months old at which point he finally decided to walk.

He also was very mobile in that he moved a lot but in weird ways. I have no memories or photos at all of ds sitting up in that way that a lot of 6-10 month old babies do. He was always moving even if it was just lying on his tummy and kicking his legs while getting nowhere but weirdly he didn't walk until later.

Ds also rarely put weight in his feet when you held him, he would just collapse his legs. He also didn't seem as strong as other babies his age but he is walking fine now at 2.5 years old. As for talking - well I'd quite like him to be quiet occasionally

I think we have the record (so far) for delayed walking. DD is 2yrs and 2 mnths and not walking independently yet!

Paeds quite happy, it will come (hopefully before my back gives out).

IMO it is worth seeing GP for a referral to paeds if not walking by 20mnths as it was very reassuring to know that other development was fine.

DD also very small, Paeds weighed and measured and was happy that she is appropriate size / weight for birth weight.

the trouble is children don't read the handbook - don't want to hijack your thread but could give you examples of how mine don't fit the handbook scenarios. i think it's pretty normal for them not to.

WinkyWinkola · 06/06/2007 21:24

They all do develop differently, don't they? My DS only started walking at 18 months, using a spoon at 20 months but could say loads of words at 15 months.. .. .. .

I'd not worry until your DS is 24 months and not walking.
