Is this enough milk?

My nine month old is eating three main meals a day and two snacks. She just loves her food! I no longer give her milk earlier in the day, just some formula in her porridge, although sometimes I just use whole milk if I don't have much time, then a bottle at 4pm and another bedtime. She still gets up twice a night for a feed though (sigh!) so four bottles in total. What's people's opinions on how much milk she's getting at her age? She's nearly ten month. I'm a bit worried that it'll be difficult to get her off the night feeds in the long run also!

How much is that in total OP?

Shazzyj87 · 24/08/2018 10:00

20 oz

20floz is the absolute minimum she should be having OP plus there’s a big sleep regression at 9 months so I personally wouldn’t be looking to reduce the night feeds yet.

Is there any way you can get at least one of her ffs in the daytime though rather than at night?

Thank you for replying .

The thing is, my health visitor told me to drop her lunch time milk so I could gradually get her off milk all together as part of the weaning process. My health visitor doesn't come out anymore and it's been a while since I've seen her as I've not had much time on my hands. Just wanted to see what people's opinions were . Not sure if I should re introduce the lunch time milk?

My youngest was down to 1 or sometimes 2 bottles a day from about 7 months. Guidelines are different where we live and if they are eating 3 meals and snacks they don't need that much.

So personally I'd say fine mine only ever had about 4 bottles a day when drinking only milk and would never drink that many on on top of food

My ds absolutely loves food. He dropped to 10oz at about 9 months. 1 5oz in the morning, 1 5oz at bedtime. He would vomit if given any more. HV said just get him on multivits. He was born on 6th percentile but by 4 months was on the 91st. I was accused of over feeding him for months and encouraged to drop bottles (turns out at his 1 year check he was perfectly in proportion 98th for height 91st for head and weight- his dad is over 6ft).

My HV said some babies just drop milk before others and that's fine if all else is well.

He is a year old now and will only drink a cup of milk at night. He prefers water. I just make sure he has lots of dairy in his diet.

The HV should be giving you the NHS guidelines which are 20 floz as an absolute minimum at this age and baby only having solids 3 times a day at 9 months, so no snacks. I think she’s been giving you very outadtated advice there OP.

If baby is waking for milk, I’d definitely try to get more milk in them during the day. It might not work but you can try. Baby obviously needs it and it’s not your HV who’s having to do the night feeds Smile

ElectricCandlelight · 27/08/2018 08:45

Oh sorry I missed the part where they are waking for feeds at night, in that case I would be reluctant to drop feeds in day if still waking at night.

Hi @JiltedJohnsJulie - I actually do not think 20oz is mentioned anywhere in the current NHS guidelines:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/drinks-and-cups-children/

The most recent recommendations from health trusts (First Steps Nutrition and Caroline Walker) are "about" 600mls (20oz) for 7-9 month olds and "about" 400mls (13oz) for 10-12 month old (i.e. there are no set minimums).

The old advice was indeed 20oz until 1 year but according to my HV it has been recently revised down because too many people take the phrase "food before one is just for fun" too seriously and forget about the importance of iron intake.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/08/2018 16:43

Sorry, hadn’t realised they’d changed. Seems like I’m not the only one spouting outdated information Blush

JiltedJohnsJulie · 27/08/2018 17:59

Sorry, meant “seems like the HV” not me.
