2 year old not really talking

hi. how much should a 2 year old be saying as my dd has just turned 2, but does not really talk an awful lot. She says mostly one word answers, but only really has a handful of words she says.

She says, "yes, no, mum, dada, baba, shrek, stuart(as in stuart little!)" and a few other words.

Should I be worried?????

I wouldnt worry. My dd's almost 2. she doesnt say many words. she can say mum, tigger, tickle, okay, and can almost say quack.

When ds1 had his 2yr development check 2 years ago the HV said that they only have concerns if a child can't say 6 words. Even then it's how much they understand that is more important and also whether they can communicate with you in other ways. HTH

I bet it will all suddenly come at once, my dd seemed slow with her words at almost 2, then all of a sudden she turned into a little parrot and now we cant shut her up.

It sounds to me that your dd understands ok and her pronunciation sounds good too, if she can say shrek. My dd1 could only say 4 things (badly) at 2.5 years and it took her ages to be able to say 'k'.

I wouldn't worry.

I wouldn't worry but would talk about this to the GP/Health visitor just to be in the safe side. Does she understand what you say/obey orders? or at least acknowledge them?

my ds1 had no words at 2 - just a couple of animal noises. The HV was a bit concerned (and he failed his 2 year check) but I wasn't - he understood everything. By the time he started nursery he had pretty much the best language skills in the class - he never bothered with baby talk or mispronounced words - just went from not talking to using sentences (probably containing actually) and talking clearly.

My ds was not saying much at two. At 2y6m he was talking for England! Now I sometimes wish he didn't talk so much! Son't worry, at least until 3.

A boy in my dds class at school did not say anything until he was almost three - then talked in paragraphs. As everyone else here says - nothing to worry about, particularly if she can understand you ok (eg "where's your ball?" "can you put your wellies on?" etc)
